Ok, long story cut short.

My 2001 Mondeo went in for it's MOT the other day. I had an idea it wasn't going to pass as a few days previous I had quite a loud thunk and then some strange old scraping noises from the O/S/F wheel. Broken spring I thought.

Turns out I was right - as well as two other things it failed on. N/S/F wheel bearing and O/S/R brake binding.

I took it into Polar Ford as I was considering having it serviced with them (it's just clicked over 100,000 miles) and they have quoted me the following, including labour, just to get it through it's MOT, not including service.

Front spring - £187.74
NSF wheel bearing - £177.94
OSR brake issue - 281.44

Total of... £647.12 - not including the 140-odd quid they want for the service, and the £250 for a years tax that ran out whilst it was in failing at being a roadworthy car.

It seems very, very excessive to me, and a lot of the (mostly very mechanically minded and knowledgeable) folk at work reckon that price is way over the top.

So, what do you guys think? I'm ringing a few indie garages first thing in the morning to get some prices. One thing I was considering was sourcing my own set of springs, I can pick up a set of Eibachs for just short of £150 so if an independent can give me a much more reasonable price on the other things I don't mind paying them a tad extra to fit the full set of springs.

This is my first real plea for help in here so go easy on me please :)

You can get that lot done for half the quoted price if you shop around. TBH none of those jobs are difficult to do yourself if you change the whole hub rather than the bearing on it's own. I'd get a front hub from a tat yard personally.

That quote is a joke.

Time to hit the scrap yards. Might even be able to get a complete strut from a car and tick a few of those boxes in one go?

Where does it say it needs a brake hose? I thought he said the brake was binding.

Quote is still bonkers mind.

£280 isn't that bad from a main dealer considering it probably needs a new calliper and hand brake cable and genuine parts aren't cheap. From the year and the brake binding issue I'm assuming it's a mk3.

Take it to an independent, it will probably cost a third of that.

My Neon needed some suspension work doing to get through its mot this year, the Chrysler parts came to nearly £300, pattern parts and independent garage came to £150+ vat including labour.

250 quid should cover All the work you want done, Do it yourself or take it to an Indi who needs some work.
