BT 20MB Unlimited

Around what times would I expect to get 20MB Speeds then? Just seems like a marketing ploy to me.

You will most probably never see 20Mb on that connection.

ADSL speeds are dependent on the quality of the line, and distance to the exchange.

Only the lucky few get 20+Mb on their line.

Post your connection stats.

Avoid at all costs.
Was on 8Mb service, and it was quite crappy with the caps, but at least stable connecting at about 6Mbs.
Parents thought it would be good to contract for 12 months more in exchange of going to 20mb service (Apparently, by their own checker i can expect about 18mb connection speed).
Since that day (Some 8 weeks ago) ive not connected at above 2mbs.
Fail is the word.

Noob here... How'd I get my connection stats?

using a bt homehub?
then login to the hub using http://192.168.1.254
the look for advanced settings>broadband>adsl then click m ore details

you might have to enter the password for the hub.if not set it's the serial number

probably, but bashing BT isn't fair because a large amount of people are still forced to use them. Regardless of how the market works, BT is my only viable option in my current location because if you try the other supplies won't actually offer you anything like as good a deal as BT will because of my location. You can go through all the websites you like or ring up, and when the push comes to shove they offer a rubbish connection speed or terrible caps or even both because they really don't want the business. Take Sky, goto their website, enter home phone number, their checker come back with line supports 1.5mb and you can have upto 2gb a month. BT gives me 6 meg line and 100 gb FUP a month, plus a broadband dongle with 1 gig. I use about 50 gig a month and when we're away the broadband dongle is great. I sometimes wish I could change ISP's but I enjoy my life where I am so should I have to move to a less desireable house for better broadband.
My point is that it is easy to criticise BT when in reality, for some people, they are the best option. If you have to have BT but are willing to spend some time, then you can get a decent experience from them. All companies have ups and downs and problems, but saying company x is crap can just be counterproductive and I feel that these forums should be a source of help and inspiration rather than a place to simply knock supplier x or company y.

Gamer T - your stats overly don't look too bad. 11+ meg connection and 1 meg upload is a fair bit better than I get here. You may find it slowly syncs upwards a bit but I'm guessing that's about as good as you'll get. Have you got the HH plugged directly into your master socket, and got an i-plate or whatever BT calls the filter plate that they now supply sometimes?

There are dozens of better ISPs than BT, even if you can't get any LLU (and Sky are a poor example of having "no other option"; what you'd get with their Access product is identical to what you get with BT). They're not going to be offering "unlimited" for £5, but the quality of service can still be far higher.
The only time BT Retail are the only option are if you're on the few remaining exchanges that were activated under the Exchange Activate scheme and even they usually have a few options other than BT.

I can have other options tolien, just they don't give me anything more. Our exchange is tiny, I'm 5+ miles away, and the biggest issue is that once I try and swap I get fobbed off because of the exchange and line stats. I just get annoyed that people like to bash bt who have inherited most of their problems and from personal experience in our village all the other isp's are just as bad if not worse. For every good experience there are 3 bad ones. I just play the game hard and use bt for all I can and believe that they are providing as good a service as the others in the whole.

Thats not true. With a line attenuation of 12.7db you should be hitting 20mbps. My cousin has a 29db and hit 17, a friend has 23 and hits 21mbps. Both on sky.

Have you tried with the router plugged into the test socket? Removed the ring wire?

Learn to read... his line download attenuation is 29.5dB...

gamer-t turn your modem off/on at about 9am and you will probably sync a little higher. then dont restart it again.

@3dcandy, people will always blame the bt isp for everything, resyncs, low sync speeds etc, when its a line issue not a isp issue. 1.5yrs ive been with them now on fastpath... and always a constant 15-20 ping in games

Issue is, a lot of people are too stuck on the price factor of a service - end of the day, you really do get what you pay for with broadband (especially with non-LLU services).

If you use the net a lot, download often and expect consistency from a line - don't go for the cheapest package out there, as it simply won't happen (not without grief anyway). A couple of rules to follow:

1) Set a reasonable budget (£15+ per month for just your broadband)
2) Don't look for unlimited - it doesn't exist, unless you want to a pay a premium for it (e.g. £70+)
3) Estimate your actual bandwidth usage, think about what you really use on a day to day basis
4) Look beyond the mainstream market - the smaller ISPs or business orientated ISPs are the ones that'll you get the most from
5) Actually read about what their business ethos is, what their services entail and don't be afraid to ring up / e-mail and ask questions about their traffic management policies (if they exist) or peak time restrictions

You want to avoid this 'fair use' malarky - you want a straight up, clear as it comes broadband service with a set bandwidth allowance (with a reasonable overage charge); then you'll get a service you will truly enjoy.

Thanks for the reply guys.

My HH isn't connected to the main socket in my house, I actually have a few questions about that -

In my parents room, there is a phone socket, so I run an extension box from there room into my room, and then plug the microfilter and other connections into the extension box.

Would I possibly get a faster connection speed if I was to run it directly from the main socket I have downstairs?

Cheers

Yes.

Just do the test socket and check the ring wires.
