My mate was basically out of a job and could just barely afford to keep his motor taxed and insured in case a trip was needed, making matters worse his mother found out she had cancer and it had spread, she lives in Canada so he essentialy went there for about 7 months to see her off (she died two weeks ago). In that time he left his car with his cousin in Coventry to look after. Last night we went and picked it up (Silver Saab 95 51 plate), essentially it was covered in about 7 months of bird crap and tree sap (parked under a tree) and tires needed pumping + i had to jump it.

Today he came around with some stuff he brought for me from Canada and i noticed he washed the car, even after all those months there was literally no marks or damage to the paintwork? I'd have though there'd be some sign but even after a polish special handwash (he paid triple :D ) it was fine!

Bird droppings were a problem when oil based paints on cars were first replaced with water based paint. Things have improved since then with both paint and polish.

Andi.

Bird poo can definately damage paint-work.. My wife's 2001 Civic has a patch on the roof where poo has damaged the top coat and caused small parts to flake off.

I have this problem, live on the coast. Leave the car a day, and you would swear its white.

I wish I was exgarating too! :/

A bird crap left a nasty mark we could not move in the paintwork of my wife's Mk5 Golf GTi 2 weeks in that was on there for perhaps 3-4 days at most!

On black cars you can see the paintwork has a rainbow effect when bird doo has been. You would not see this on a silver car. Silver has the best colour forgivness when it comes tro paintwork problems. And silver is the most forgiving when it comes to scratches and swirls. (but also the one of the hardest to colour match ,.,,,lol)

You made it sound as if you he bought some car cleaning stuff for you which was then used.

I think you misread my post :) Why would he bring car cleaning stuff from Canada? :D

The only thing which has changed to water based is base coat and some primers, even that has only happened recently. All top coats are still 2K, which while resilient to most things, bird crap is not one of them. Must be only some birds though, I've never seen bird 'etching', even from stuff that's been left on for weeks.

I misread it because the sentence structure was poor; starts off as a statement but has a question mark at the end. :o

It could also have been a really good one only available in Canada.

Seagulls are worst culprit imo, thats why they should be run over when the chance is present. Thats manly spring time when they are young and the ones that fail to fly litter the road.

Be careful when hitting herring gulls, they are quite solid birds.

Bird poo is evil, don't trust it, your mate was lucky, he might have had a decent layer of wax on it before he left it.
