Period of notice- Tesco

Yeah mate.
Im a team leader in our local one.

It is One Week regardless of length of service. My sister is a Tesco Branch Manager and that is what she just txt me in answer to your query and that was all I was required to give some years ago, my sister says it hasn't changed.

It might change between stores - it was a 4-week notice period when I worked there a number of years ago.

Nope, according to her for GA's and non salaried staff it is a 7 day notice period. That is company standard procedure. My old handbook states the same thing.

You got had mate, my section manager tried telling me the same BS.


EDIT: I just spoke to her directly, she says that the contract for GA/CA positions only states that notice has to be given, it purposely doesn't state how much notice so that section managers can be flexible wirh regard to replacement, however because of the ambiguity the legal minimum requirement is valid, thus 7 days is the minimum notice period you have to give. Sge said this is standard across all branches and she added that over half leave giving little or no notice period and it doesn't affect references or any holiday pay you have accrued.

that sounds more like redundancy payment tbh

It could be either, since it's quite common for the notice period to be the same on either side, and week per year is common both for redundancy and notice.

I suspect the terms may vary depending on role - one weeks notice for a typical role at HQ seems rather less likely than the same on the shop floor. I don't work there though so I'll defer to those who do - though I don't think we're there yet.

It's very much down to the individual employer, and even within the same employer. My original contract stated a flat one month notice on either side. The latest version is week per year with a minimum of one month and a maximum of three. We're paid monthly.
 
As stated above (in between all the rubbish)........
1.) It depends on your individual contract. Every Store may be different and you never stated your hours/days or times of work - or your age (all of which could change your period of notice) - and for all we know - he could work for Tescos in France.
2.) It makes little difference (if you don't want a reference) off them. You can leave whenever you want. Don't feel guilty - they will replace you and have someone else trained up to do your job in 3 months.
3.) If you do leave tomorrow - it's on the understanding that you may possibly owe them money... or they may hold back money owed to you - as they may actually pay you in advance - and you may not be able to ask for a glowing reference.

Just becuase it's in the handbook now - doesn't mean that is what you agreed to on your contract 5 years ago.

And why do they have to know you are going to a new job ? Tell them you are leaving to look after your sick mum - or you are leaving to travel the world...... do you honestly care that much that you can't ask them out straight what their notice period is for employees that want to better their prospects ?

Phone HR and ask. It's highly unlikely they will inform your manager, and if you are that worried then just phone them without giving your name. Simples.
 
If you think she will lie or give you an incorrect answer (or not be straight with you) - record the conversation ;) It's up to you if you inform her you are doing so beforehand.

To save me starting a new thread, whats the peroid of notice for a job thats barely started?
Starting a new job soon, but 2 days before i have an interview somewhere else that i'd frankly prefer to goto.:p
Ive been told that if its under 6 months worked there that its legally 1 days notice. Is that true?

Again, read the contract. It will be in there (I realise the OP can't find it but it will be in there). Depending on the company it's fairly normal to have a probation period. This could be anything from a month to 6 months and the notice period is usually less during this time.

e.g. normal notice might be 4 weeks but within the probation period it might be 1 week for either party.

Read the contract and the offer letter. It will be in there somewhere. However, if it really is not mentioned in the contract then I would expect that the statutory periods apply. These are outlined here:

* one week's notice if the employee has been employed by the employer continuously for one month or more, but for less than two years

I worked for Tesco's from 93-98 in an Distribution Centre in Hinckley. I spoke to the shift manager who said I need to give 4 weeks notice. My new employer wanted me to start in one weeks time. So I went to my Union rep, who said that I could leave with no notice what so ever. But I would be burning my bridges with the company.

I started work at 08:00 and left work at 13:00 that same day. Winner :)

I have no contract as of yet and the offer letter makes no mention of it.
However it does ask for 2 references and bank details.
Im wondering if they'll give me a 'contract' nearer the start date.

In which case, doesnt the law still override whats in the contract anyway? If there is a contract?

Im just concerned that this job could end up messing up what could potentially be my dream job if i get it! :(
