To shoot or not to shoot?

Im not sure a .177 gas pistol would be powerful enough to kill them

This.

.177 Air pistols are designed for target practise, at paper. They aren't designed for hunting, and as such it's a very bad idea.

I'm curious as to why they come into your garden though? Why no one else's?

Leave radio controlled car in garden. When you hear noise, operate the car, I'm sure they'll fly away from it :)

Serious and helpful post from a Licensed hunter - you CAN shoot certain birds but they have to covered by a General License - the link is here - and you have to have a valid reason like crop protection, wildlife preservation etc (crows/magpies who raid nests) and "being kept up" isn't a good enough reason unfortunately.

Now, a CO2 .177 pistol is only going to be at most 6ft/lbs (legal limit) but in all probability it'll be around 4-5ft/lbs which'll only be good enough energy for shooting closer than 5m away from the bird to guarentee a kill, anything more risks a wounding shot which isn't pleasant to deal with.

A better way might be a tie bright cloth to a stick so the wind makes the cloth swing about, bright movment will put off almost all birds (except nesting ones) and can be done very quickly/cheaply/easily.

However, if you do want to kill them then if any neighbours etc see you and call the police you WILL be in trouble (if they can't then it's down to your conscience).

As has been said, it depends on the type of bird as to whether you can shoot it.

It is strongly advised not to shoot anything with a pistol, as it will likely not kill it unless you were very very close to the bird.

Lastly, make sure the pellet does not leave your boundaries if you are going to do it, if you can keep within these criteria you should just buy an actual Air Rifle, get some practice in and then take them out cleanly.

I have had similar problems with woodpigeons, myself and the neighbours like to take them out when the opportunity presents itself.

Air rifle, clean shot - make sure you're not spotted and the round doesn't leave your borders.

Sorted.

Sorry OP but you want to shoot two fast moving birds that are scaring your cats with a BB gun...? Good luck with that :p

Alternatively you could not let your cats at the bottom of the garden whilst the birds are nesting...

do it, put a slug in both of em. when they fall on the ground injured from the pellet, grab the hammer and finish the job off. (the cats i mean :D )

Get a rifle with laser sight, when it's dark, dress up in camouflage, paint your face and go soldier!

Murder the wretched creatures. Make sure to create "Cooking Bird Pie with Scort" thread shortly afterward.

Bit of sweetcorn in an air rifle, will give them a little sting, wont injure them, although as other people have suggested wait until the nesting season is over.
