Heading down to Reading this week for a course forlast MCSA exam. (Network infrastructure) - Work paying so there's no way i'd turn it down...

Anyway, I'll get there this evening and imagine most of my evenings will be spent with nothing to do... If all else fails, I'll speed run through Might and Magic VII on the laptop... :|

Anyone have suggestions on stuff do to? Any good places to eat or bars to visit?
I'm fair into live music so if there are any gigs on, that'd be a good shout.

All suggestions welcome. Hookers and blackjack are probably not on the agenda though... :D

Reading is your run-of-the-mill southern City-town and as such it has your usual assortment of pubs, bars and eateries. If you want to get a bite to eat I can recommend the Bel and Dragon, or late night student-esque drinking can be had in the Purple Turtle. :)

If you've got the time, hop on a train to Oxford and have a look around there. Much more to see/do than Reading.

I've not spent much time in England, so will see how much free time I've got to look around. Bank balance demands I don't go out too much but boredom will overpower it.

As much as I dislike solo drinking, a few pints must be consumed. Will check out the Purple Turtle maybe, it's a strange name...

...for a strange place (not that I've been inside). Round the back of the Oracle shopping centre (fairly well signposted so should be an easy find). It's hard to miss due to the interesting colour scheme! :)

Actually, the area around the back of the Oracle isn't a bad place to spend an evening should the weather co-operate (and it looks like it will, today excepted).

As above - typical town-wannabe-city with all the usual chain places, so plenty of opportunity to drown your sorrows should you so wish.

I'm not sure I'd call it a tourist destination in its own right but it has plenty of connections to places that are if you have time.

The place I'm staying is right next to the The Oracle.
I did some wandering around, just because...

It's fair warm here, compared to the storms and misery I left behind in Aberdeen. I best get a few pints down me to celebrate this.

Please do not take Reading as any form of indication as to what england is like, if you do not spend much time down here. Reading is a commercialised sprawling mess of a town, with nothing much nice to say about it at all, other than it being useful in the sense that it has large superstores. Great for having a large selection of bathroom fittings in the jumbo sized B&Q, not so great for sightseeing :p

Go north of Reading towards Oxford, and its all beautiful, but do not expect much from Reading itself..

LOL! It's a bit worrying when you have to issue apologies for a the place. I don't think it's that bad - I can certainly think of plenty worse places to go. :)

Reading's not as bad as I was expecting when I moved down here 4 years ago.

Enough to do and London / Oxford are close enough.

Go for a stroll to Oxford Road at night on the Reading West side of the town..

You'll get plenty of experiences! Think of it as a prelude to L4D III!!!

DO NOT DO THAT!!

So far I have spent the night at Hobgoblin Bar... Actually, I need to get food and go to sleep...
It's a good bar.

The Hobgob a good bar?? The residents there share 10 teeth between them..

Exactly on the back of the Hobgob is where the action is..a few clubs and big pubs where you can feast your eyes on all the Reading Uni slapper wannabes.

Hehe, maybe I'll look for that later.
What I want at the moment is a good local pub for local people... Hobgoblin was welcoming enough and I liked the people. (There were some people that needed avoidance though :D )
