I'm currently running a AMD 64 s939 system with a agp 6600gt. I bought the parts from OcUK in 2004 and it's done me well - currently running Win 7 without a problem.

Alas, it's time to build a new system. I've been looking around trying to get a good idea of the best system, but I'm stumped. There seems to be a lot of talk of new socket types next year, so I'm not sure what to go for.

I'm looking just to buy the cpu, motherboard, ram and gfx card - I have the rest. I'll be using it mainly for gaming - I've been dying to try Crysis for years!

I know you're probably sick of speccing people, but I'd really appreciate the help. I'm on a tight budget of as close to £350 as possible.

thanks for your help

Cheers, that looks great.

Would there be a big difference if a swapped the 4850 for a 5770? (Providing I can steal £50 from somewhere)

Stulid's spec looks perfect...You could have course go for a Athlon dual core if its just gaming and also a cheaper motherboard if you want to save more and get a better gfx card.

thats a great build for the price

a 5770 performs about the same but uses a considerable amount less power

but not really worth it for the price

stulid's spec is perfect really, could bump up to a 5770 if you have the funds, I'm pretty sure it's about equal to the 4870.

The 5770 sits between the 4870 and a 4890, has dx11, uses less power and runs cooler. Furthermore a 5770 crossfire is quite impressive so there's a good upgrade path for the future.

Well worth the extra I think.

Couple of questions:

Is this a good setup for gaming?

I had another check of my power supply and it's actually the 460watt version of this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-022-AK&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=
Will this be adequate?

thanks

Will be fine for games which don't particularly need more than 2 cores.

That PSU should be okay, Akasa aren't too bad. :)

That's a great upgrade for that buget :) Although do you really need that power adaptor? The card usually comes with one.

No it doesn't, 5770 barely matches 4870 performance. Nonetheless, it is a good graphics card.

To the OP: your build looks fine although it doesn't support Crossfire (stulid's build doesn't symmetrical Crossfire as well) and you're getting a dual core CPU which will sooner or later appear to be a weak link.

What resolution are you going to game at?

I'm going to be gaming at 1920 by 1080.

I take it, it would be worthwhile saving for a quadcore then?

I wont bother with the connector - thanks Orcvader

I'll swap the hd to a spinpoint
