They've just edited the page to remove it - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympic_games/world_olympic_dreams/default.stm

On a side note I have to wonder why the BBC consistently promotes private companies like Facebook and Twitter ? I rather doubt they would allow product placement from someone like Pepsi or Apple.

It's a social networking tool and a medium form. They're not explicitly promoting these companies, they're taking advantage of their community. Completely different to a Pepsi or Apple product placement.

First and foremost they are both private companies and _not_ web standards. You don't actually need them in order to make your views known to the BBC, and yes, they are promoting them ad infinitum. The BBC was perfectly well able to connect with its viewers with good old e-mail and "contact us" forms (or even BBC blogs).

Many people. I don't.

I think it's more aimed at people who have made friends during their life. ;)

*awaits someone saying the usual I DON'T NEED A WEBSITE TO SEE THE FRIENDS I LIKE, THE ONES I LIKE I AM STILL IN TOUCH WITH* :D

Have you not seen Jake Humphrey pimping his iPad on the BBC's F1 coverage? :p

To be fair, the iPad is perfect for Jake's job. It's basically a clipboard with tons of electronic features. He can check the FB/Twitter feeds, see the stats quickly and show videos. :)

I admit it is the best use I've seen an iPad put to and works extremely well in the setting but poking fun must always trump balanced reporting :)

I must admit I do find it irritating how integrated Facebook et al are becoming.

During the winter when I was unable to get my car out I was forced to use local bus services to get to work and the only way of finding out the service updates from the bus company was to 'follow' them on Twitter.

Whats wrong with a service status page on the website?!

While I agree that 'proper' companies should have a 'proper' service status page I suspect that for many small businesses stuff like Twitter is just an easy way of getting info out, you don't need to specifically create/commission a feed yourselves, you can just use the ready made twitter options. Also it can be easy updated from any device with web access as opposed to maybe needing to go in via some other route.

Pretty disgraceful for a bus company to go down that route however especially bearing in mind the typical clientele (a lot of older people who may not even know what Twitter is). What is the name of the bus company?

This very forum (OcUK) could potentially have full facebook integration in the not too distant future, since the software it runs on (vBulletin) now incorporates this as a default feature in it's latest version.

You could soon be seeing 'Like' buttons on top of threads etc. :p
