Well, I'm looking at doing a General Discussion forum. I know they is a lot of them already so I need to make sure I do a good job and get it to stand out.

So, I'm wondering if you lot could tell me what you look for in a forum to make you want to join it?

I'm going to be using phpbb3 on it and I'll be getting a professional style created for it.

Thanks
Jo

Generally I will join a forum with a general interest in mind, whether that is PC parts (OcUK), Linux or a sport etc.

To market a general discussion forum will be very challenging.

Don't waste your money getting a professional style made until you know you can attract people. There are hundreds of good styles for free. Also whenever there's an update you'll have to update it yourself unless you want to pay the company to do that too.

On the subject of the forum, general boards, most of the time, just don't work. People like to join bards on a specialised subject. You have to consider what people will be searching for to find your board. If they're looking for, eg movies or xbox or pets or something like that, they're going to get hits for huge dedicated boards well before they get a hit for yours because the page ranking on specific subjects will be much better as those sites have far more hits for specific words.
