I'm really getting into BFBC 2 and a few other new games, but feel my 4870 has finally started holding me back. The question is do I go for something from the 58xx series now or wait for the new revision later this year? (not sure exactly when that will be).

The annoying thing is if I do wait until the end of the year I'll have loads of uni work around then and wont have the time I've got now to get the benefit out of it!

I play at 1680x1050 by the way and was originally considering a 5870. Any ideas people? :)

A 5850 will be all the power you need for bf2 at that res.

Get a stock asus 5850, clock it to 1200 850 and hold onto it, by the time it shows its age at worst a year down the line, the 6000 series will have dropped in price and you can flog the '50 and get one of them.

Sounds like a plan and I would ideally get the Asus card out of preference, but its only available for pre-order (its been like that for a while as well). Its the same on another site I occassionally get parts from. Can you recommend another equivalent?

Cheers :)

I'm running a 5870, admittedly bought for bc2 as well lol, I know what you mean, running the game at 80-120 fps makes it much smoother and easier to kill people lol, I'd recommend at least a 5850 with voltage tweak so you can clock it up or a 5870 if. Your feeling flush :) all depends on how much you want to spend. I got a reference asus for the overclocking, makes a good difference.

IMO you dont really need a 5870, getting any stock 5850 and bios flashing will leave you with something identical in all but warranty to the asus one, any problems flash it back.

The extra 100 certainly isnt worth it at your res, no question.

There's very few 5850's about new that you can flash the bios to a voltage tweak version. Most now seem to be custom pcb's with fixed voltage regulation. Just something to bear in mind

Thanks for all the responses!

I think I'm just tempted by the 5850 now to be honest. I worked out what I mainly play and its currently source games and just BFBC 2 lol I don't really want to shell out 330 notes just for one game really. Especially having already bought an ipad with all my overtime + some b'day money :(

How does a stock 5850 handle BFBC 2 and how far can i take the clocks using the overdrive facility in the drivers panel (no tweaking voltages)?

I'm seriously considering the XFX 5850 currently on offer unless you can persuade me otherwise :p

Cheers

Well i have a 5850 and it runs BF BC2 on max fine. It never drops below 40fps (Usually runs at 50-60, depends how chaotic it is), so you would probably do a lot better due to better processor/ram.

Soo what's the general consensus? :)

I've even been tempted by a 4870x2 for £180 as I'm only really going to be playing in dx10 or below really.
