Car/van rental, any advice?

Me and my boyfriend will hopefully be moving to London soon-ish, and as we have a lot of stuff to move, we've been looking into renting a van or an estate car. Thing is, he's turning 25 in a month and has only had his (Finnish) license since February. I've spent the last hour looking through different car rental sites' T&C, and they all seem to require for the driver to have held their license for at least a year. I don't have a license.

So I guess what I'm asking is: does anyone know if the at-least-a-year rule applies to international licenses? And, does anyone know of a car rental company that doesn't require this?

If this fails.. any moving companies that would move a small studio's worth of crap for fairly cheap?

I'm starting to get desperate and would appreciate any insight you may have. :)
 
I would doubt you will have any luck hiring a van. They are very strict about it from my experience with rental places.

Could you just not rope someone else (parents/brother/sister?) to hire the van and drive it and help you move your stuff?
 
Ring smaller local van rental places, they may be more flexable compared to larger multinationals.

Unfortunately that's not possible. :(

Hiring from a local company sounds like a good idea.. but this is for a one way trip. We'd be picking the car up from Glasgow and dropping it off in London. I assume small companies can't allow this?
 
If you say you can fit it all in an estate car then maybe a courier would be a good idea or loads of transport firms on ebay advertising £1? mile etc
 
Your stuffed if you need a one way rental, only the big co's do that.

Even van and a man is going to cost you plenty of money.

You could do this, not that im advocating this behaviour of course.

Buy a 200 quid van, and join the AA, fill it with your stuff then have a breakdown near home and get recovered to London.

Enterprise will let you hire with less than a years driving experience. I had an astra sized van off them a couple of years back.
You'll probably have to pay the young driver's charge if he's younger than 25 though.
Not sure what their policy is on EU licenses mind. I wouldn't imagine it being a problem.

A foreign driver with a license 5 months?
 
I'm gonna give Enterprise a call later today, would be great if that worked out. The EU license shouldn't be a problem, as tripitaka says it can be exchanged for a British one.
 
Called them up, Enterprise has no problems with him having the license for such a short time, nor is the European license a problem. :) Seems like I know where to rent. Thank you guys for all the advice.
