Hi,

My headlight bulbs (dipped) are on the way out. I am replacing them with a pair of Osram Nightbreakers. Would it be silly to upgrade the main beams to Osram Nightbrakers too? I'm slightly confused if the main beam would be much brighter than the dipped if using the same kind of bulbs.

Many thanks,

Larnica

they usually use different bulbs so your main beams would stay the same unless you use a bulb system which shares the two.

whether you would benefit or not depends on what sort of driving you do. You only use your dipped beam on unlit country roads. If you live in the city and your commute to work doesnt involve lots of unlit country roads either than its a waste of time to use them for 5 minutes every year.

I purchased some Nightbreakers last year, and they didn't last 3 months.
I'm not sure if this was a defective pair of bulbs but I have heard they don't last that long.

I always use night-breakers best bulbs you can get for older cars tbh, but don't buy them off ebay as the are a truckload of counterfeit ones on there

I have Philips X-treme Power +80% and find them really good, have had them in this car for over two years, and the other car for about 6months. would get them again.

Another vote for the Philips X-treme Power.
My first pair of Osram Nightbreakers lasted around 7 months. The second set lasted a year.

The X-treme Power are much brighter too.

Whereas mine are still going strong 3 years on, and I do a fair bit of night driving.
With the first set, they both went within a few weeks of each other.

After the first of the second set went I replaced both with the X-Treme.
The first set were on whenever I was driving as I was in Norway.
The second set were on day-running lights for only 3 months and then in the winter they were on a lot of the time due to the relatively short days and generally grim weather.

I got the second set for free as the garage was as surprised as I was that they blew so soon. The Philips are brighter anyway.

Thanks for the comments. Will be going for the X-Treme bulbs instead, I thought they were double the price but have found there not :)

You use your dipped beam whenever it's dark. Are you thinking of main beam?

I'm guessing so. In my main beams on the Mondeo I've got a cheap set of 100W bulbs and just normal ones for the dipped. 100W bulbs aren't road legal but no ones likely to notice in normal use and it takes 10 minutes to swap them out for the MOT, even then there's probably no need. They do make a big difference on unlit roads and unlike dodgy hid kits the beam is still correct and they come on instantly.

Another vote for the Phillips bulbs. Previous set of Osrams lasted under 12 months, the Philips have been on ever since, which must be at least 3 years.
