I've just started a physics project, and as part of it we need to take images at around the frame rate specified in the title.

What resolution and minimum focal length can we expect for such a frame rate?
and does anybody know of what price bracket is needed for such a camera? Examples would be especially helpful. :)

The Fuji Finepix HS-10 can do 1000 fps.

Resolution table:

60fps --------- 960x720
120fps ------- 640x480
240fps ------- 442x332
480fps ------- 224x168
1000fps ----- 224x64

This could be exceptionally difficult if you're doing this as a hobby

Cameras that take video at 100 fps are usually ridiculously expensive. Nothing i have experience of can do this, and a quick trawl through the sony site reveals none of their pro cameras can do it, let alone their consumer ones.

are you sure ??

Fuji website says this about video recording

http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/s/finepix_hs10/specifications/index.html

1,920 x 1,080 pixels (Full HD) / 1,280 x 720 pixels (HD) / 640 x 480 pixels / 320 x 240 pixels (30 frames/sec.) with stereo sound

and for photo shooting

max. 7 frames (3 ,5, 7 and 10 frames/sec.)

Its going to cost £1000s for a camera that can do 100 fps.

Aye, Casio also do a 1000fps camera, similar to the Fuji mentioned above.

Buying a proper high speed camera will cost a fortune though so it might be worth seeing how much it is to rent one from somewhere like this: http://www.slowmo.co.uk/

That fuji looks like it could do the business if it can focus close enough. The object in question is less than 10cm long and 5cm high, containing 1mm balls. Might also add that colour is not necessary

11.5mm wide, 39.5mm high to be exact

What is your budget? Our Lab has a camera that shoots at 1000FPS, VGA resolution. All in it gvie us very little change from $20,000 USD. A 500FPS version was about 12K USD

our budget is in the hundreds not the thousands unfortunately. Still working out some details of it now, but we may be able to get away with 500-600 fps. the more important thing is being able to track 64 1mm balls as they move around for about 10seconds, so then we can model the movements etc..

What sort of focal distance are we looking at? If we can get a focus close enough, that fuji might cut it. Would a macro lens be compatible with its high fps mode?

The resolution of the Fuji will be far to low to track 1mm balls.

I think your only option is to rent a professional camera.

I have a Casio EX-F1. Costs ~£550
This can do 512x384@300fps, 432x192@600fps and 336x96@1200fps
This is able to focus on your target area of 10x5cm from about 30cm.

The Casio EX-FH100 has similar specification to the Fuji mentioned earlier and costs ~£260
That can also focus on your target area from about 50cm. (Yes, I have one these too! :D )

Casio do a range of cameras with hi-speed video capability. Look for the EX-F??? designation.

That seems more promising, can you set the framerate to other values, say 800 and get a resolution in-between the 600 & 1200 resolutions?

Sorry to bring the topic back up, but could you confirm that the closest those casio cameras can focus on in the high FPS mode is 30 & 50cm? Would purchasing a macro lens reduce this distance?

Ok, so far the best bet looks like the casio ex fh25 as it has a pretty close focus distance.

It does have a macro mode and a super macro mode aswell, but I have no-idea if these are compatible with high speed video mode. If anyone owns a casio camera with high speed mode, would it be possible to set the focus to macro/super macro and test if it will take high speed video??

Also, the contact us page on http://www.casio.co.uk/support/ seems to be broken for me :( If it works for you, can I ask for you to paste a contact number for a UK office on here so I can ask them questions directly.

My apologies for being so needy
