Hi all, my first post here so take it easy on me :)

I have an ageing 1gb 8800GT and was wondering is it worth it getting hold of another for some SLI action?
Or would i be better off buying 2x 1gb GTS250 cards and using them instead?

I'm on a pretty tight budget so buying 1 awesome card is out of the question, but i can get hold of 2 new 250s for around £130.

What would you all suggest?

Thanks.

If you have a 1gb 8800GT, then why not just go sli?

Unless your trying to play crysis @ 1920 x 1200 with stupid amount of AA, then i doubt SLI will struggle :)

have a look at these:

If you take the SLi performance to increase the same with the 2 cards then spending £30-£40 on another 8800 is cheaper and will around the same performance.
That's a 8800GTX, not 8800GT. Also, I think a 8800GT 1GB 2nd hand would probably cost around £45-£50 (£30-40 is 512MB).

So the option can be either get another 8800GT 1GB to SLI, or sell the 8800GT 1GB and grab a pair of new GTS250 for £130 (which will have warranty).

Judging by that chart it looks like the better option for me "right now" would be to find another 8800GT.
I'm only gaming at 1440x900 and I dont have any major problems with the games I do play. So a nice little boost for £30 to £40 should see me through for a couple years i think.
Only on the rare occasion do i game on my tv at 1920x1080, and thats mostly emulation anyway, with the odd game of call of juarez.

Thanks for the replies folks.

I would consider a 5830, try and stretch your wallet a little if you can.
Missus,2 kids, not gonna happen right now ;)

Get the two GTS 250's then.

Selling 8800GT and buying 2xGTS250 is waste of money.
I'm SLIing 2xGTS250 1GB each and difference between them and my previous 2x8800GS (384 MB) is not big. I'd rather say it's cosmetic as playing the games is almost the same, but some game features has been improved (like in DIRT2 - in the menu, when you enter the wagon, there are no microstutters now; but on the other hand - in GRID they are still there).
I'd recommend buying the same 8800GT/1GB and SLIing them - it's really quick (as much as GTX260 is, roughly), but the most important thing is: there's no more competitive solution like this, having compared "efficiency to cost" factor.
Of course, you can buy 5850, as adviced, but who is gonna pay for it ? You ;-) So you can see - advice can be nice, but not for your pocket.

My son has got 1440x900 and 8800GS and is able to play all the games with no pain. Of course, I'm not serving him the newest games as I presume you would like to play, but I'm quite sure a pair of 2x8800GTs is the best you can have for 30-40 quids.
