With Paul's snowballing popularity I thought some of you might be interested in his latest release. The title track has leaked and it's amazing good (see below). I've never been a fan of his instrumental albums but if the rest of the tracks are anything like this ....!

By far the best instrumental he has done since Racer X IMO and I'm finally convinced that his approach to riff-rock can actually work really well. What are your thoughts?

Bring on the album :D

Awesome, glad he's got some new stuff out. I liked Get Out Of My Yard, but the next album wasn't as great, don't listen to it much.

Really good. I've never really been able to passively listen to instrumental guitar music, Satch, Vai, Gilbert, Petrucci, I just can't listen to any of them and I don't think this will change it.

It's awesome to sit and actually actively listen to, but I couldn't have it on in the car or whilst I'm doing something else.

Naffa, only a fraction of Gilbert's solo work is actually instrumental. The vast majority is actually twee pop along the lines of Busted or McFly... I like it :p :o

Yeah, I know. When I said 'Gilbert', I had already said that it was instrumental guitar music I didn't like, and I was only referring to his instrumental music. :p ;)

Aha, I see :p

I was never really sold on his previous two instrumental albums, but this new one is hopefully going to more enjoyable.

Yeah, well, if that track is anything to go by then it'll be an absolute demon of an album. I'll be picking it up for definite. :D

Disagree with the above statement, as Get Out of My Yard and Silence Followed By A Deafening Roar were both awesome.

This sounds like is going to be just as good - really looking forward to it's release.

The title track on GOOMY is incredible but there isn't really much to go back to as its just basically 2 minutes of unaccompanied shred. Plus 'The Second Loudest Guitar in the World' is better as it has that cheeky intro :p

The rest of the album was pretty boring, with the exception of 'You Kids' which was by far the best track on the album. I'm sure Gustov will come swanning in to disagree with me on this, but tracks like Hurry Up and Castle Dragon only only exciting live. The recorded versions are just lifeless to me.

SFBADR, for the first few tracks was more of the same but then the album became tamer and more melody based as it went on. I think it's more interesting than GOOMY due to those improvements in melody, but the latter half of the album simply wasn't exciting enough to go back to regularly. Paul vs Godzilla was probably the highlight.

But then again, I'm an Alligator Farm man. Please inject more Alligator Farm into my veins please, Paul.

11 thousand notes and beehive live are the only two Gilbert things I don't own - they are from the Flying Dog era aren't they? Gilbert at his unashamedly cheesiest!

Was it any good?

There is some very old poor quality live video footage.
Looks like a bootleg to be honest.
That DVD where they are dressed as astronauts is brilliant though.

Space Ship One?

Hai guys! Nice thread Nitefly

I have all of Gilbert's albums and do have opinions on them :p

To be honest I have to be in the mood to listen to P.Gilbert, I just can't listen to him at any time.

I enjoy all of his albums, Alligator Farm is just fun fun fun, Get out of my Yard is technically mind blowing and I love his Laney tone throughout!

Burning Organ is a good mix between technical guitar and catchy pop songs. Flying Dog is another fun album! I personally loved SFBADR, melodically it's so good! Only 1/2 tracks on it that I don't particularly love.

To be honest I prefer Technical Difficulties and The Gargoyle to the track linked above but I can tell this album is going to be incredible! Got myself a new amp the other day too :D Back to being able to mimic Gilbert's old school tone in a second :)

and yes Nitefly, I pretty much disagree about your opinion on GOOMY but ah well :p

I've just never been able to get into Gilbert. I love guitar of all genres really, from heavy rock to even country western style (aka Eagles,) however Gilbert, and many other technical players like him, just don't do it for me. They just seem to lack that special thing I've grown to love about guitars.

Fantastic player, just not my thing I suppose.

Did you ever get your hands on Tough Eskimo? I only ask as I just found my CD and had completeloy forgotten about it. I'll report back later with my thoughts.

Only in when in the mood.... pfft, noob :p

It really depends on whether you view Gilbert as a guitarist alone or something else. I think this sums up Paul Gilbert more than any terror licks (awful quality, sorry):

Yeah! :D
