Buy now or wait? 5850/5870

Having gone from a 260GTX to a 5870, there was a fairly big difference, but I would advise you to wait to see what the 6000 series brings - I dont think you'd be "blown away" by a 5 series, and it is a lot of money.

Id wait a few months and see how much a HD6850 is that would be a much more noticable upgrade from a 4000series. In the meantime If you really must upgrade you could try adding a cheap second hand 4870 for crossfire if your psu and motherboard permit?

There will always be a better gfx card coming so no point in waiting if you need a card buy the best available within your budget then just game away.

I had the oppurtunity yesterday to buy a brand new Gigabyte 5870 for £260!

But........ although I really really wanted it, Iv waited this long, Id be foolish to buy now when the 6000 series is only maybe 4-5 months away.

I agree with you to a point..... however..... there is alwas a sweet spot for when to buy products.

For instance..... when I bought my gaming pc back in April 2008 had I of waited just 2 months more I would have ended up with a corei7 and a 4870 rather than the core2quad and 3870x2 I bought.

So thats why Iv promised my self t not make these mistakes again.

If you in the market for a card, and are willing to spend £300 on a gpu, why spend £300 on a gpu which came out in September 2009 (yep that long ago now), when we are months away from a newer better product, which will cost the same price.

I'm really getting into BFBC 2 and a few other new games, but feel my 4870 has finally started holding me back. The question is do I go for something from the 58xx series now or wait for the new revision later this year? (not sure exactly when that will be).

The annoying thing is if I do wait until the end of the year I'll have loads of uni work around then and wont have the time I've got now to get the benefit out of it!

I play at 1680x1050 by the way and was originally considering a 5870. Any ideas people? :)

At that resolution....... if (and thats a BIG if) you must buy now, go for a 5850 or even a gtx 470.....

Unless you have plans for a larger monitor the 5870 is probably over kill for you.

I bought a Sapphire 5850 in december and have clocked it too above 5870 speeds. It runs BC2 with ease at 1900*1080, never dipping below 50 fps. I would recomend that if your desperate to upgrade to a new card.

If you just want something to get you by until the refresh comes out later this year, then going crossfire would be your best bet. Just my 2 cents :P
