Now that Virgin are offering their HD service subscription free, how long can we expect before Sky follow, atleast with the core channels that Virgin offer? I know Sky has more HD content that Virgin, but surely it must be the start of free HD for the masses?

Or am I dreaming?

It depends, if Sky loses business it will have to do something with it's prices as there astronomically high if you have the films and sports packages.

I'm cancelling my Sky HD subscription this month as I feel a bit robbed with it. It now seems they have moved on to 3D even when they haven't rolled the HD out properly.
Bye bye HD, £10 a month is too much for the patchy coverage you offer.
I'm also cutting back on other Sky "rubbish" to get my subscription down from about £70 a month.

it scares me how much people pay for Cable/Satellite TV.
I reviewed what i was wasting because i rarely watch TV these days and i was still spending 40 quid at the end of the day.
Mates of mine think nothing of spending £100+ a month..
Isnt Free-view starting to do HD stuff too soon??

i just got rid of sky movies and sports, with the HD sub its now about £30 a month used to be about £50-60....

Which is going up in price from September.

I think they will drop the price at some point but with only a few channels on Freesat and FreeviewHD, there isn't much in the way of competition. And Virgin Media works out slightly more at the equivalent tv package.

Also cancelled mine recently, not worth it.

Cut down my Sky package from £23 to £20. Only found out few months that I was paying for channels I never watched. Now I might scrap Sky completely due to Music Choice being discontinued and keep using Freesat HD through my media centre.
Never saw the point of having Sky Movies when it’s cheaper to sign up to Love Film which has a wider range of films including in HD.

When they decide to call it the 3D subcription instead, just like when the Sky+ subscription became SkyHD subscription. It's a bit off that we have mutilroom and have to pay it twice however.

There is some history. Sky+ used to be £10/mo too but that eventually got stopped (or rather made inclusive in more and more packages). HD might end up going the same way - though it does actually cost them, unlike Sky+.

It's definitely a mug's game though. Sky know they can charge as much as they can get away with (without Ofcom putting their oar in) because they know people will bend over and take it. Used to be one of them. Still am to some extent but now on minimum package so it's not so bad.

I'm going Freesat HD in the new house.

The money we currently pay for Sky (£70) is obscene when we barely find anything good to watch. Cheaper to go with Lovefilm and save £50.

I pay Virgin £50 a month and for that I get:

- 'Medium' TV with V+ (PVR) HD box
- Phone line with unlimited inclusive anytime national calls
- 20Mb broadband

So not amazing value I wouldn't say, though the V+ facility is excellent. Home entertainment is an expensive luxury, though today

Sky Sports and Movies is just too expensive for me by far. Virgin charge £26 per month for Sky Sports and given that I was hardly watching it, I just can't justify the cost.

Anyway on the subject, it's only a matter of time imo before HD is considered standard and before it's taken as given that HD channels are included in any TV sub. Sky charging £10 p.m. for HD in this day and age is not sustainable imo.
