Taking holidays/time off work

He only sprung the 1 at a time rule on us last week, so I couldnt have known I wasn't going to get the time off. Originally he said to me that I would get time off when it was quieter, now he's changed his tune

I was going to say like others that you should have booked well in advance. But your employer is being unreasonable and in fact telling porkies to you about saying "yeah no problem when its quieter you can get time off".

Now when its too late he drops the bombshell thus scuppering holiday plans.

Conclusions?

1. Boss is **** poor at managing
2. Small companies can be basically dictatorships and theres nothing you can do about it. Get another job

You live and learn.

Kind of have a solution now. Going to take the first 2 weeks in august off and the other halfs boss has agreed to her working a double shift 1 day then getting the day off the next for 2 weeks, so she'll be off tues/thurs/sat/sun for both weeks i am off. Ok so it doesn't allow for us to go anywhere, but at least we can have day trips out or a weekend away. Her work is pretty strict and even they can manage to work something out.

Yes my boss is a dictator with poor managing skills. Every other garage in town is closed for 1-2 weeks during the "trades" apart from his. If he'd just go with the rest of the crowd then there wouldnt be an issue, as we'd all know for sure well in advance exactly when we would be off for at least 1 week of the year.

It's fair enough really that you have to book holidays in advance and not everyone at once in a small department.

For example this year I booked 4 weeks off basically getting most of the summer. But I have had it done to me in the past.

The reason I did this though was to use up some holiday, didn't really need 4 weeks. :p

Otherwise like you I would end up having it in November.

I didn't book it until May so it isn't like no one had a chance..

It is a pita however booking holidays a month + in advance, I have given my mates much abuse for announcing stuff at the last minute. Can only fake illness so many times. :D

To be fair closing your garage for 2 weeks, especially during a period when everyone else is closed, seems pretty silly from a business perspective. He's got that right!
