Need money for a car - What would you do?

Carcraft do some fantastic deals at very competitive rates.

They have you over a barrel! Listen to the adverts you pay almost twice what a car is worth over the term you pay it off. Keep well away from that kind of stuff

just buy a poop car as a run around, we pretty much all had one like that at first

edit: old uni friends car was so old and decrepit that one day we were driving to footie in the scorching sun and I was complaining the whole way. When we got there ang got out he walked round the car and smashed in the side window shouting "there! Problem solved!" :p spent the last 6 month of it's life with him with a gaffer tape window lol.

Edit edit: he punched out the window cause they were all perma jammed up rather than for no reason :)

My first car cost me £650 and was a heap. But I loved it, now I have significantly more cash than I did at 17 and I would pay double to find it and get it back.

My wonderful 205!

3k is abit ott for a 1st car if you had said 3k including insurance that would sound better or even 2.5k inc you must also remember your 23 anything over 1ltr and you will have your pants pulled down by the insurance company and insurance isnt exactly cheap at the moment prices have rocketed

im 29 passed my test in February bought my 1st car in march a 1995 1.0 nissan micra i paid £495 for it + £780 insurance be sensible with your 1st car you will regret it otherwise
looking to upgrade after a year of holding a licence also ill be 30 lol

yeah i am 23 and for my 1.2 punto cost me 2.5k for the year got my pants pulled down right but ah well

This threads sarcasm and joke detector are way off...

Agreed, first car for £3k?

My first car cost £900 (Red Rover Metro), my 4th one (and im now 25) cost me £4.5k (mk4 golf gt tdi)

£3k for your first car is way over the top, remember, the insurance is going to cost around £1k, maybe £1.1k+

Why pay for something twice credit is bad 35% is very bad thats £35 in every £100 for every year of credit.

£1000 at 35% 1year is £1350 more if it takes longer to pay back CRAZY.

Insurance is gonna kill as will fuel, tax and maintenace. Why add 35% intrest to your cost get something cheap as a starter that wont loose value if you add a few dents and scratches to it.

Dont forget to maintain your car, oil changes and checking brakes and looking after you tyres will save you loads of money in repairs. IE dont let the brake pads wear out and ruin your disc's, check tyre preasures so they wear evenly, change or top up oil stops engine going bang and keeps emisions low for MOT and always change the CAM belt when recomended it's cheaper than a new engine.

£3 k budget £50 oil change Cam belt £200 ish tyres £30 each if you dont wont to stop or go around corners well £50-100+ if you do Brakes £60 ish Wipers gotta see were your going £20+ for decent ones, TAX upto £200 odd and MOT £35

There's nearly £700 cost for the first year or so of motoring some stuff you may have to do others not?

£2300 left buy a cheap non flashy basic as you can stand small engined car for £800 £1500 left for insurance (£1000 if you can) if you get change even better keep it in the bank in case of other unexpected repairs IE battery dies in the winter £60 ish or wheel bearing goes and so on.

Basicly dont blow it all on the car there's a million other things you may need it for to keep it on the road.

For insurance try the comparison sites then look at the cashback sites and see what the best deal is there's usual £30-50 cash back availible.

BUY A HAYNES MANUAL and lean to do some basic stuff youself.

LOOK AT FORUMS for the car you decide to buy find out what to look for good or bad.

Where is the NEAREST main dealer.

Which is the best LOCAL garage.

And finnaly get BREAKDOWN cover with relay or recovery not just roadside asistance. Sorry thats more money £70 from the AA but worth it and if your insurance offer cheap breakdown cover take that as well. (I broke down camping last year used 1 to get car to campsite 1 to get home all good and me happy)

Ps good luck because what ever you get it's still pot luck!

Thank God you capitalised the key bits otherwise I wouldn't have been able to read that post at all. :p

Although borrowing money for a decent car isn't always a bad thing, I think borrowing money for a £3000 car is neither here nor there. A £3000 car isn't necessarily any more reliable than a £1000 car. Older cars break down which is something you will learn in the next few years and every trip to the garage will be in the £100s. Paying a loan AND car repairs is going to leave a sour taste in your mouth. Having bought 2 brand new (sensible) cars and owned plenty of old bangers, I would say your middle ground is the most expensive motoring (in my experience anyway) when I part-ex'ed my last car which was a 6 year old £3000 car, It hadn't had any parts replaced. In 6 years it had had 2 tyres and a backbox so is potentially an expensive buy for someone. I think you should just buy the £1000 car for now.

Paid £925 for my first car, insurance on it was £1400 when i was 17.

I still have it 3 years on and now i can insure it for less than £500

Why post tosh like this? Neither funny or helpful.

certainly not helpful but I thought it was funny

Asking whether it is better to buy a car on a credit card or an overdraft deserves exactly what it got.

£1000 is plenty for a first car, drive it for a year, flog it for not much less than that, if it's in one piece, and then get something a bit better / more expensive. Rinse, repeat.

rite ok, I will spend what I have saved for a car. I didn't really want to lend anything as I know what debt can do to people. Maximum £2,000 it is then. Thanks guys.

I would pay under £1000 still..

Old cars keep their value well if you look after them, and then you can get a nice second car after a year or more.
How old are you anyway? At 17 a 1.1L VW cost me £1000 a year to insure.
At 19 (with 1 year no claims + Pass Plus) its still about £1000 a year on my 1.4L Seat Ibiza.

Actually I found it funny :)

Me too. Guess it was way too subtle for some. :D

My first car cost £400 (OK it was a while ago) - spending decent money on a first car is stupid. Stupid stupid.

Why on earth would you pay more on insurance than for the car?! Bit of a waste of money there.
