So is there going to be any decent branded Android of other OS's tablets out in the next few months that could be better than a large ipod touch?

I need a tablet in my life! I dont need or have the use for a laptop with crappy battery but i do have long car journeys when im going to the football for away games. Would be ideal to drop some films and games on. The phone wouldn't last a 4 hour journey each way and after a while the screen size for web browsing gets so frustrating. Also very useful to drop PDF's and Excel sheets on at work for when im away from my PC with store managers, plus just general browsing when i cant be arsed turn the PC on.

Luckily due to Froyo on my nexus i dont need to waist an extra £100 on a 3g ipad as i can tether the phone to it. No flash is no big deal for me at all its almost a non point never used it on my nexus one. I wont be streaming over 3g much and the stuff i would stream would be BCC i player and that supports ipad fine. Multitasking is a slight issue but hopefully IOS4 comes to it. (or jailbreak with backgrounder)

So is there anything with at least as good as screen as the ipad on the horizon? Ims till not convinced android is suited to a tablet just yet.

Does anyone more clued up about Android know if high resolution screen support is on the roadmap? To me it looks like 854x480 is the current highest resolution supported. I'd ask for more out of a tablet to be honest.

I have an ipod Touch, iPhone and an iPad.

The iPad is not a giant iPod Touch. For one thing, it has 3G (or mine has), and higher res, its faster, it has a better screen, oh yes, BIGGER SCREEN.

That screen really makes all the difference. If you want one and can afford to, just get one.

Correct, rumour has it that Gingerbread will increase that to a 720p wide-screen resolution, maybe higher. Gingerbread is due Q4 this year and will probably be shipping on devices by Q1 2011

android 3.0 will support higher res . probably october/november

isnt there a google chrome OS supposed to be coming for netbooks/tablets too ? or did that vanish

That does seem really interesting. really fresh looking home screen. Any details on when its out?

Meemo, the predecessor, looks good to. It was released on one device (The N900) and is now more or less dead to Nokia, and Nokia thought that the OMAP processor from the Pre would be fine to power it too. It isn't.

Nokia has some of the worst smartphone hardware out there, which is insane given its market share. And lets not mention Symbian :p

As for Intels side the Atom's are the complete opposite of the Nokia hardware in that they are hugely powerful (for a tablet), but not efficient enough to to last as long as the iPad and snapdragon powered devices.

IMO Android is a good stop-gap for tablets, but Chrome OS is the really interesting one (Also due Q4) Add that to something along the lines of "Chrome to Phone for Android" where you could connect your PC and Tablet and you could have a real winner :) Best thing about Chrome OS? Flash 10.1 built into the browser

I dont see android in its current form being a good enough experience on a tablet. nothing wrong with it but its missing that polish a huge screen deserves.

Looks like nothing that is half decent will be better than ipad for at least a while. IOS is a closed platform but you cant deny that the user experience they MAKE :D you have is really well polished.

What would totally rock is webOS on a tablet! If any of you have used webOS by palm is quite a nice UI and handles multitasking with a card system. Shame the hardware wasn't really good enough. Now HP have bought Palm hopefully they get it done.

Looks like for now buying an ipad and then possibly selling it if anything interesting comes out. Apple devices hold value very well :D

Nokia = decent hardware but relatively cheap = marketshare.

For "dumb" phones I totally agree.

WebOS tablet would be cool. But it looks like we're set for WebOS printers instead  :p

Non touchscreen does not equal dumb, Nokia make decent, id say the best non touchscreen phones both OS and hardware.. touchscreen - most certainly not!

Anyway enough of phone talk.

Chrome OS does look good - but lets hope they abandon the purely non desktop approach. I wonder what MS will try and do as Windows 7 cant compete on speed/footprint.

haha brilliant so its an ipod touch with 3g? but actually only half the models have 3g so what ... its a giant ipod touch.

classic a true classic.....

i hate to try and knock the apple PR BS out of you (bc lets face it that will never happen) but its exactly an ipod touch made bigger.
