Symbian-Guru site owner in Symbian/Nokia rant :D

It seems a little strange to me that Nokia ~smartphone~ sales would be so high, I guess it has to do with what you qualify as a smartphone these days as almost all phones have a lot of features packed in.

Maybe we need a new category of phone.

On the smartphone thing, there are a lot of phones that Nokia have stuffed S60 into, apparently they count as smartphones despite never being used in that way, and being rubbish if you tried.

S40 is what's stuffed into the cheaper handsets (except the cheap touchscreens).

Which is a dumbed down version of S60 and it is pretty dire, it manages to make S60 look interesting which is saying a lot!

S60 is most certainly a smartphone. S40 isnt and isnt counted as a smartphone. Nokia is still king of smartphones globally, they own the mid to low end space. High end Android/apple phones get all the press, thus taking a higher percentage of mindshare.

Nokia are still king, they make great phones still, decent hardware - but software is severely lacking for touchscreens. Think how many non touchscreen smartphones are sold - Im sure the majority (which would reflect Nokias sales).

Symbian phones have always been counted by all industry analysts as smartphones. In fact, Symbian invented the term "smartphone". If anyone gets to decide what's a smartphone and what's not, it's them. :p

Probably. :)

what defines smart phone is up for debait me thinks

personally I think smartphone is more for "business originated" like blackberrys.

I like my nokias since the birth of series 60, the n95 and e71 I had were very well made peices of kit, in fact the n95 lasted me for ages, I kept it a very long time and the firmware updates kept it going.
Deciding to try touchscreens, I got a n97 in place of my e71, big mistake. The device was built solidly enough and had a nice kb but had some daft bits like no @ key for example. useless resistive screen you had to peck with your fingernails, they even included a stylus, lol in 2009. The gps was hobbled by the shielding problem so the free ovi maps was useless, the camera lens scratched itself to death and despite having 32gb onboard storage it had rubbish RAM meaning apps would fall over and complain, they even removed a internet radio app from the software too.
When a mate broke his gf`s n97 and begged me to sell mine to him, i jumped at the chance and bought a nexus one. First time you fire it up its like a revelation, everything was so fast, and it did not have a steep learning curve.
Nokia are in trouble and that n8 looks still born to me, they better just cancel it and move to meego

Never heard that one, but I have to say it wasn't much of a stretch from "smart phone" ;)

I was just like the Guru, Nokia all the way since I owned my first cellphone.

I've traid samsung, lg and motorola and nothing managed to get close to a good Nokia phone.

Sadly that N97 killed it for me, what an abysmal device, it looked soo good on paper.

Now I'm the proud owner of an HTC Desire. I love every bit of it, and I've set it up perfectly for myself. :)

This is one of the problems I've had in the past, I've not had an experience like the Guru or you until Android came along, I've had phones from every manufacturer under the sun and they all seemed pretty similar to me, maybe some better in small ways than others, never really notched up any kind of brand loyalty due to a lack of individuality, up until I got my G1 I really had no reason to stay with one manufacturer or OS. I just followed where the hardware went.

After Android that all changed, android blows me away with every step it takes, imo Android and iPhone are at the top of the game, nothing I've seen comes close to the versatility and performance of the OS'. Those other contenders of RIM and Symbian don't come close.

Nah, I disagree with that. There is really only one "true" smartphone (in my world that is something rivalling a computer) and that is WinMo. Android and Symbian are knocking at the door but not quite in the same league...

Things like Blackberries and iPhones are what I would term Bridge phones, not standard phones but in no way a proper smartphone... Funnily enough one of WinMos downfalls (in the phone arena at least) is that it was too "smart" for it's own good. Seems people don't actually like proper smartphones. :p

well I did say the term smart phone is different for us, even through we know iphone and blackberrys are part of it...

I do agree with ya that smart phone do indeed rivel that of a pocket PC thats probley why you don't see em these days

? imo winmo has the smart part right but no the phone part, what is it you think that makes winmo more smart than android/ios?

Because you can pretty much do anything with it (including plug in serial devices if your phone had a socket for it). Android is closer than ever but it still doesn't have the breadth of WinMo and even with the latest update iOS really isn't in the same league.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65N20Y20100624

Nokia's next flagship smartphone, the N8, will be the last N-series phone running Symbian software. "Going forward, N-series devices will be based on MeeGo," said Nokia spokesman Doug Dawson.

Might be too little, too late. Still, more competition is always good.

like I said in my "spec me a phone thread" I don't care what OS it runs as long as it does what you brought it for. and its not annoying...the seller of the phone for me is the interface thats probable why I ve had SE for the past 2-3 times

I started out with the N80 -> N95 -> N96 -> Nexus 1 and tbh i was disappointed in the N96. It wasnt a bad phone per say, it just felt like a side step from the N95. At this time the iphone was selling like hot cakes and IMO symbian was lacking any apps, it needs to sort out a good app store as this has been the driving force of the iphone and now android.

Considering how fast the tide has turned I think Nokia can sort out something, but it starts with trying to establish a strong variety of apps. Nokia have been kings of innovation in the past and im sure they can pull something out the bag.
