Pc was left on, so went to shut it down. Jiggled the mouse and then up came AVG saying that 60 GB of all my media was basically infected with a Virus and it found a few thousand ish worms :(

Naturally I was very $*$&%!!!!!!!!! at this, had my moan at her downloading rubbish then went to tacke the problem at hand. AVG moved the files to the virus vault although all the files it was talking about was in the same place I left them. I do have back ups.
So I chose the option empty the fault. About a minute later the vault was empty. Yet my files (infected ones) were in the same place they were before. Stil worked as I randomly opened a few. Even ran a FULL system sweep, found a few more.
Removed those from the vault then ran yet another full system sweep and no viruses found, yet my files were still there.

Has AVG just cleaned the files, or do it simply empty the vault be it (removing them from the AVG list and doing nothing with them).
In the same breath the files are where they should be and AVG no longer says them are infected ??

Everything seems to be ok, but I am thinking of wiping my media drive, restoring the backup from 4 weeks ago and leaving that as that.
Naturally I do not want to back up potentially foooooked files

What you think ? Thanks a bunch

tbh ive never trusted auto backups, ive always tended to make an image of my drive and re install from that and kept any important files away from that drive, backed up on another.

AVG is ok, but I'd get a second opinion. The Avira Rescue CD works quite well. It runs outside Windows, so nothing can interfere with its scan.

If you haven't already, give your partner her own restricted account. Then inform her that she is responsible for cleaning up any mess that she makes in there. :p

Also, get into the habit of 'switching user' ( Winkey+L ) when you step away from the machine. That way you're still logged in and all your programs are running, but a password is required to access to your desktop.

Problem with that is, I like turning on my pc and comming back a few moments later and its logged in :p

I have found in the past, that adding user accounts has seriously messed up my file/print and media sharing, where i'll change a password then my own pc wont let me back in again from another machine, along with other issues I cant be bothered to type.

As im the only one who uses the sharing part of my network I saw it pointless to use file permissions etc as its only me and i dont have kids haha

I'll probably run another scan with another program and take it from there, but as i said all the files seem to be ok.

are you sure your files are actually infected, I cleaned a virus recently that created a NEW file in every folder with a name ALMOST the same name as the existing file...

it had 9800 infections, and AVG crashed because there were so many, I had to get it to clean them a few folders at a time..
