Has the iphone changed much since its release?

1 - you can (or will be able to soon) jailbreak an iphone.

Although oddly you still can't do as much with it, even more oddly you can't talk about jailbreaking on this forum, whereas flashing and rooting is fine...

2 - they all look like the iphone (without the design) even down to the icon layout on some of them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPAQ

;)

Oops... They even stole the prefix!

3 - are you serious??? Thats the lamest thing I have ever heard. Basically you are saying that HTC / Android phones are for emo types?

But it's evened out by the number of iPhone users that flaunt their phones and put down anyone elses choice... "I'm suprised you didn't get an iPhone" is an example of the comment.. Sorry? So because I'm young, slightly geeky and into phones should get one? Perhaps I like different things? Not everyone wants the same out of their phone... :p

As for the price, there really isn't that much in it now. The gap between sim free prices for the top end phones (HD2, X10, Desire(ish) and maybe Galaxy S) has gone up slightly, there used to be nothing in it, but the gap between contract prices has decreased. Cost is an issue for some but a lot of people will be paying a similar amount whatever phone they choose.

By the way, did you know that the iPhone 4 components cost less than $190?

So?

A HTC Desire costs $174 for the components alone, as for the discrepancy in price it's closer to 14-18% if you factor in the equivilent memory (an SD card).

3) eehhh ? WTF are you on about ? emo doesnt even come into it. A large portion of HTC users buy them BECAUSE its not an iphone. They see the army of iphone users as sheep - all blindly making crap purchases because they have been duped by the marketing. Theres some very posts saying just that above. These sort of people buy HTC phones as a way of rebelling against what they see as a fashion trend. Emo doesnt come anywhere into it

Thats the funniest and most hypocritical comment ever.

Apple consumers have always been slated for being 'sheep' and for buying the products purely to project some fantasy 'cool' image - essentially buying products not for what they are but for how they supposedly make you look. But there you go essentially stating that is exactly why people buy HTC phones.

Anyone who buys a phone for any reason other than the phone itself is a sheep and is a fanboy (and totally stupid too).

Oh and I meant the BB Storm earlier not the Bold - stupid phone name is stipid phone name.

It certainly has although the best way to notice it would be from going from a iPhone 2G to iPhone4.:p

I have the 3G and found the 3GS a non update and while I like the iPhone 4 and I will be getting one, the differences don't amaze me. It feels like it's just doing what it should do in 2010. Although the build quality is way ahead of any other phone.

I don't think we'll get another revolution of the iPhone simply because the iPhone was the revolution.

Other smartphones are nice but are they better than my 3GS? Not in my opinion...

Nail, Head...

This is what so many people don't understand. Opinion... Just because something is the best for them doesn't mean it's the best for everyone else. Just because you (not you but a generic term) like iPhones doesn't mean I like them, which is why I don't have one. Nothing fanboy or hateresqe, just that I prefer other phones.

Unfortunately so many people can only see in black and white...

That's your opinion. However as an advanced user myself... it IS the best and simplest UI. It needs prettifying to match the W7 phones but thats about it...

Personally I agree with him. It's the reason I wouldn't get an iPhone4*, the UI is abysmal IMO, rows and rows of buttons, reminds me of windows 3.1 and my old SE phones. Most people don't have a desktop full of applications, folders and files on their computers so why have one on your phone!?:p

*I didn't get a previous iPhone because of both the software and the hardware, I never liked the styling. That said the only two nice phones out at the moment are the HD2 and the EVO, one of which you can't get in the UK...

So?

Exactly, HTC Desire $174 (if you say so) and iP4 $187(16GB). Yet if you compare the retail price I see more than a $13 difference.
And the fact that you can use SD cards for the Desire and not iP4 does not justify the additional costs for the iP4.

Have you had an iPhone 4 in your hand? It's glass and metal rather than plastic, the build is impeccable.

When you consider a 32gb micro SD is £90, worst case scenario it's £110 more.

This is what people don't consider when they think about price. The Desire is actually quite cheap for a smartphone (in fact it's the same price as the top end sony Dumb phones a couple of years ago). Others like the HD and HD2 have/had an RRP of £450 and the X10 was released at £500. Once you add the storage card you're in exactly the same price bracket as the iPhones...

Thats quite interesting in regards to the iPaq. I said this before about apple how they don't really create new ideas, but they 'innovate' on existing ideas or technology. Then someone responded saying they don't innovate they aggregate'.

My dad said this to me a while ago in regards to business. It's usually businesses that takes an existing idea and do it better that makes most of the money.

Definitely true with the iPhone.

Are you serious or just trolling me because you ran out of arguments?

-Design, support and quality are three things that every other mobile phone manufacturer pays for too.
There is nothing in the design, support or quality which justifies the 30% or more people have to pay for the iPhone. Should there be any, please list them (just saying they are better wont do!). By the way, did you know that the iPhone 4 components cost less than $190?

-Right, have you ever even seen a BB Bold?

-I did not say that any smartphone outsold the iPhone. I said that Apple do not dominate the smartphone market. And they dont.

Share of 2010 Q1 smartphone sales to end users by operating system, according to Gartner is as follows:

Symbian 44%
RIM 19%
Apple 15%
Android 10%
WinMo 7%
Linux 4%
Other 1%

FYI

Smartphones sold in 2009

Nokia 67.7 million
RIM 34.5 million
Apple 25.1 million <--- not on top :p
HTC 8.1 million
Samsung 5.7 million

You are a perfect example of a blind apple follower, n111ck. Sorry.
Where are you getting your information from?

Can I go in a HTC shop with a couple of specks of dust under the screen of my phone and walk out 10 mins later with a new phone? Can I break my headphones and be sent a new pair FOC by overnight courier?

I meant Storm etc.....

So the iPhone has captured nearly 20% of the smart phone market in three years despite having no track record in telecoms and with only one model of phone released each year and and those phones carrying a premium price? Thats what I call dominating the market.

LOL so what does the iphone4 do that the Desire cant do??...surely it should be the other way round ie theres things the iphone4 cant do that the Desire can do quite easily without having the need to illegally hack the iphone.

MobileMe. iTunes.

Hassle free syncing tyvm.

Edit: Don't say google or some other system, it's not as easy or simple as mobile me, so don't even start going there.

:)

:p There we go then :D I do hate being called a fanboy just because I prefer macs, ironically people forcing their own opinions on people is the same thing these people hate about how Stevie forces his user choices on them :p

Yes but whats the better way? It takes < 2 seconds to get to the app I want to use, it's about speed for me and there isn't any quicker way TBH! *Slide* *Tap* *App is open* lovely :D

htc phones were invented long before the iphone. My htc blue angel phone is a 2006 phone, and I think if they did marketing and advertising like they do on the iphone, on the htc phones, htc would be much more popular??

That $13-14 equates to an 8% difference in cost of components, and there is a 14% difference in price at retail.

The cost of the components is only part of it, R&D costs for the iPhone are probably somewhat higher than the HTC due to the custom software and processer, rather than 'off the shelf'.

:)

I see...whereas the Desire is pretty much tied in with Google and i could easily synch my contacts, calendar and other stuff via google much like Mobileme...but unlike mobileme i didnt have to pay a monthly fee;).

When i had my Desire, which i sold because im getting an iphone4 myself:p...i could easily synch it too...pretty much hassle free synching too as well...the only thing im not looking forward to is having to use that godawful program called itunes but ill make do:p:D

So other than those 2 things...is there anything else that the Desire cant do??.

That i will give you...apps wise nothing comes close to the iphone which happens to be the main reason why im getting one...as a multimedia toy its the best out there....wouldnt rely on the iphone for calls/texts or emails...thats why i carry my BB around.

No, you can not, you have to make an appointment in advance.

And yes, you can walk into a shop and have your HTC replaced. It doesnt even have to be a HTC only shop :)

- Can I break my headphones and be sent a new pair FOC by overnight courier?
I dont know, can you? What is FOC? But I dont see why you would want to do this, the default headphones are terrible!
What makes you think that HTC dont replace broken headphones?

First of all, 15% is not nearly 20%. 19% by RIM is nearly 20%.
If you call 15% in 3 years dominating, then what do you call Androids 10% in 1.5 years?

So other than those 2 things...is there anything else that the Desire cant do??.

Conclusions

Choosing a phone is never a cut and dry decision for someone else to make on your behalf, but if you have to make a call on these things, then one would say that the iPhone 4 is a better phone than the HTC Desire. It's better shaped, has a better screen, you can fit more on it and, arguably, it looks better too. That doesn't mean that the HTC Desire is some kind of inferior mobile because it's not. It's just different. 90 per cent of the planet would prefer to have an iPhone 4. It will suite their needs better, but there's going to be plenty of folk out there who'd rather have the flexibility, the cheaper price and the higher level of originality that HTC, Sense and Android offer. What you have to ask yourself is which is the one for you.

Thing is as a mac user getting the google stuff requires me to go and set it all up, instead of just putting a username and password in and my Mac Pro, Macbook Pro and iPhone are all on the same page. [Including keychains and system settings] Lovely :D

Besides I pay for MobileMe for more than just the syncing, webspace and email etc. It's a package which is nice :)

That i will give you...apps wise nothing comes close to the iphone which happens to be the main reason why im getting one...as a multimedia toy its the best out there....wouldnt rely on the iphone for calls/texts or emails...thats why i carry my BB around.

Why not? I can't say in two years of having a 2G then a 3GS i've ever missed a call or it's dropped a call or missed an email!? Or texts for that matter?
