Streetview in poor areas of the USA...

While places in the UK get grotty they are all ways eventually sorted out.

America has essentially just abandoned Detroit and the residents. It is easy to say move but what if you have a mortgage?

The houses are worthless because there are no jobs within 50 miles and are now full of homeless.

Yes it is easy to get jealous at big houses compared to our crappy terraced houses, but a terraced in London could go for a million quid. It's about location and not size.

No, it's about size. I would rather live in a large house, than a million quit terraced on in London

In America you can just hand the keys back to the mortgage company and it ceases to be your problem. You can't do that in the UK as the mortgage company will sell the property as quickly as they can (i.e. cheaply) and you still have to pay any outstanding debt. It's one of the reasons imo why every global financial crisis starts in the USA, it encourages borrowing without the consequences. You'd think that with the consequences all on the banks they'd be careful who they lent to, but no.

Me too to an extent, I would never buy a house in the centre of London but I wouldn't want o live in the biggest house ever if it was in the middle of the ghetto and I had a 100 mile commute.

Yes you can simply move house in the USA and don't suffer negative equity but it is still going to suck if you had almost paid it off.

Remember America is very big, if your hometown went kaput and the Governments advice was move would you be prepared to go to the other side of Europe for example?

Easy to say move in practice people have families and friends.

Still has the best music tho.

A fine example of typical council housing.

They are currently getting rid of the old housing, building the new houses and moving the same people in :p

I hate those houses :(, I also hate the whole area around Union Rd / Parliament road, row after row after row of This. It's depressing and i think this is the reason Middlesbrough was voted worst town in the country - even though there are some very nice areas.
