Ok I guess it's a bit cheeky considering there is some threads discussing TV's but they ain't helping my poor little head decide, we have a new baby in the house and I am pretty tired LOL

I would like a new TV around 50" to be used for TV, movies games and HTPC general PC, game, use, duties. Would like 1080. (I intend to eventually use an HTPC gaming machine as my main movie/HD/gaming source)

What models of TV are recommended and which is best for all round use as above?

Budget is up to £1200 I guess but obviously spending less would be preffered, if a £650 model is only slightly inferior to something twice the price I can live with that.

So far LG and Panasonc seem to be the best looking models in Curry's, with John Lewis stocking a couple of models with the free 5yr guarrantee.

Any recommendations?

The 50V20B is coming into stock at JL soon (it's finally appeared on the internal systems) only catch is that it'll be £1599!

They can be had for £1425 with the 5 year panny guarantee (I paid that for mine) - shame it took JL so long to get hold of them really as with staff d/c it would only be £1407!!

Otherwise for 50" I would stick with plasma as you'll love watching films on it!

The Panasonic TX-PF50G20B I have been looking at is around £1000 Curry's to £1300 John Lewis?

I also like the look of the LG Infinia series plasmas such 50PK990, though it has a few different connection options and prices from £750 upward depending on the options of Bluetooth and WiFi etc? Wife likes the 60" but not sure about cost at £1500 odd?

I'm not sure that Currys are an official provider of the 5 year guarantee and if you opt for buying their policy it's VERY expensive and probably not as good as one from JL or with Pana direct.

With regard to the 50PK990 there's a review over at AVForums of that very TV - give it a read and see what you think - doesn't seem too bad apart from if you have any plans to game on it!

Well I had a quick look at the 50" LG 50PK590 (£750), 50" LG Infinia 50PK790 (£899) and 50" Panasonic VIERA TX-PF50S20B (£999) in Currys.

Have to say that I did think the colours were a little over done on the LG? too bright and vivid I thought? Edge definition I wasn't too sure about, I am sure it seemed a little less smooth on fast moving material, not sure if it was the ringing mentioned in the above link?.

The Panasonic VIERA TX-PF50S20B is £999 saving £200 and though a little bulkier looking and also lacking some features (the LG has one scart and s-video and four HDMI sockets) my partner and I both thought colours were more natural though in comparison to the LG it seemed a little softer?

I believe all the 50" LG's have the same screen?

The 60" LG was not in, still unsure about this as 60" seems huge bang for buck at £1400 in store.

Ended up with the LG 50PK590 plasma at £700 from RS, they didn't have a 60" in stock and I couldn't be bothered waiting a week, nor was the Panny in stock, so far I am very impressed with it, screen is a little reflective but my old TV screens anti-reflective coating got a little marked over the years and I have kids, so guess the LG screen may be easier to look after.
