Girl crushed to death by electric gate.

Sorry, but what crap.

I had a very unexpected and nasty incident with an electric gate last year. The gate was closing at a friends house and he said 'put your foot in the way' to stop it closing. He actually meant the sensor, but not thinking much of it I put my foot between the gate and the wall - foolish, but holy crap, I'm glad I still have my foot. They close with unbelievable force, totally unnessesary. Had to get two friends to yank me out of the damn thing. The gate wouldn't go back the other way until it was in the fully closed possition

You wouldn't believe how dangerous the bog standard electric gate can be and I certainly wouldn't be overly critical of anyone that suffered even worse misfortune.

You seem like a reasonably intelligent guy, but with all due respect, it takes a degree of carelessness or just plain moronism to try to obstruct a moving electric security gate.

They wouldnt be much use for security if they could be stopped from closing easily would they?

Hopefully this latest spate of deaths and injuries will finally teach the stupid the lessons that intelligent people knew all along. Dont mess with Death Gates.

Its quite simple.

People dont put their foot out to stop other moving objects like Planes, Trains, or buses, so why try and stop a Death Gate?

Where do you draw the line at common sense these days?

Should we ban gates because idiots get themselves trapped?

If I had a nice long drive with some electric gates, I would seriously look at upgrading the motors in them to the most powerful monsters I could find, so they would snap shut in a matter of 1 or 2 seconds, rather than a slow sliding accross.

Would make for some hilarious viewing via cctv with the local chavs.

"The two men, aged 38, have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence."

I bet they will get off with a small fine.

They shouldnt even get a fine. What did they do wrong?

British justice eh? Why cant anyone ever take responsibility?

The mums a crackhead and was probably looking to score while the kid was causing trouble by trying to intefere with the gates.

So two innocent men are to be brought before the courts as scapegoats because of a negligent mum looking for someone to blame?

Its disgusting.

Ahhh... So your kids, whether you currently have any or will do in the future, will be born with a mature head on their shoulders and not think its fun to jump past a moving gate etc not realising (as kids wont) how powerful and dangerous they are ??

Give over, kids are fundamentally stupid and do silly thing and this is through no other reason than lack of life experience and understanding.... Were you born an adult then ??

No sorry, fair point, which puts the blame at the door (or gate LOL) of the mother even more.

Well, possibly.

From other reports, it was a new build estate with a newly installed gate. There will be an investigation to check that the installation was done correctly.

Just stfu, the mum actually tried to stop the gate and turned the electricity off and a police officer smashed the motor and she went into cardiac arrest.

This gate was by no means particuarly big or look like it would pack such force. Easily could have broken someones arm or cave in somebodies chest, surprised all of us.

like a lot of steel work they're deceptively heavy and so carry a lot of momentum.

would have been better if she'd just stopped her child ****ing with heavy machinery.

Probably. :p Hindsight being 20/20 and all that.

Edit - Was it at the entrance to their home? Apparently it being an entrance to a flat? Maybe it was just closing and she wanted to rush through being a normal child and impatient but got caught!

It's not hindsight its right up there with holding their hand while they walk down a busy road to stop them running into traffic.

construction site iirc.

"the gates at the entrance of flats off Maine Road in Moss Side"

In that BBC article, can't see "contruction site" any where.

Definately carelessness on my behalf - I had misunderstood my friend's instructions and assumed that the gate would stop closing. Very easy to see how an accident can occur. I wouldn't have put my foot in the way unless 'instructed' to do so but even then the gate was deceptively strong and the end result outside my contemplation of what might have happened in those circumstances.

They certainly should have some basic safety mechanism built into them. I mean, why on earth design it so it couldnt change direction half way through moving, it's just asking for a crushing accident.

No, for building a dangerous gate, what if some old woman trips over? She would be crushed by the gate through no fault of her own, you can't have something that dangerous around a residential area for obvious reasons.

the gate is literally edging onto the construction site, it is on basically the last finished part of the development, with an active construction site right next to it. It does look like people (possibly including the little girls family) are living in the flats that the gate is for though.

They do it just adds to the cost, the two that have been arrested probably made the decision not to spend the extra on the safety bars and take the risk.

May end up in a corporate manslaughter charge for the companies directors / owners

Mother should have been looking after her kid better.

And a security gate which doesn't close? "Ohhh sorry mate, someones just keyed all the sides of your car, looks pretty costly, they just stuck their hand in the way of the gate so it stopped and they could get in, sucks to be you"

Are the children actually getting caught between the gate and the wall where the sensor covers or between the bars and wall/the sides of the gate and wall where sensors don't cover.
