So what boxes would a user tick that decides on which version to go for?

Would the main reason to go for the higher specced/slightly more expensive 1GB model be if the user has a larger resolution such as 1900x1200?

myself still currently being on a 1280x1024 resolution, it would be more ideal for me to get the 768MB model? although I expect even that model to handle 1900x1200 pretty well.

If I remember, a 1GB model would be more ideal for a game such as GTA4, as I remember the sliders being restrictive when attempting to max the game using 768MB on my 8800GTX. It's funny that the base GTX 460 reported bandwidth of 86.4GB/s is the same as the 8800GTX, I am not sure how that works with everything else though as it is obvious the GTX 460 is a lot more powerful so it doesn't equal the same I suppose.

so the main question is, what kind of user should be suited to go for the reference 768MB version?

2 more posts dude 2 more :D

Stop wasting electricity you plonker, and give me some productive input please, lol.

2 more posts to what? self destruct in 10 seconds? I believe I am already entitled to free postage based on the amount of time I've been registered :D so am not in need of a 250 post count!

Free shipping link is at the top right of the forum which is what I quoted from.

I forgot about the members market, just checked the forum FAQ :)

Access to the Members Market forum requires two things. Firstly, you will need to have over 250 posts and have been signed up for at least 90 days.

I think it all depends on the price that these cards arrive at. If it is more expensive than a similar or better performing AMD card - then there isn't many users suited to get a GTX 460.

You do highlight one of the possible issues of the new GTX 460 768MB card - it has a reduced memory bus (192bit) and total Video memory compared to the 1GB model and the better Fermi cards. I look forward to seeing benchmarks to see how much of an issue this is.

The extra video memory and bandwidth will certainly help at higher resolutions with details turned up. At 1280x1024 the GTX 460 768MB version will most likely be 100% fine - but I could only recommend it to you when we see the prices and benchmarks.

It just says 250 posts there too! I think 100 posts is just for free shipping? ;)

You have to activate your trust too with a button below one of your posts. I've actually tried this and nothing has happened as I don't see the mm, that's after 24 hours too (edit:nm I see it now). The FAQ details it. Although you won't be able to do this unless you have at least 250 posts. It is seperate requirements to the free shipping and each FAQ clearly states what is required!

I'm considering going for a 768mb model because of the res I play at with no roadmap to upgrade to a larger monitor anytime soon. At around £160 it's a good upgrade I think with room for a good oc in future if needed.

Looking at some reviews there doesn't seem to be that big a difference in fps between the 768mb and 1gb models.

And comparing to the fact that you can get a ATI 5830 for £163 that does have 1GB memory maybe that would be better? I am in a situation unsure what to decide about to purchase

There won't be at your resolution, but at high resolutions with AA applied, the 256 bus & 1GB will perform much better than the 192 bus.

Tbh, if you're playing at 1280 - with no plan to upgrade monitors - then I'd spend less.. even a GTX460 is overkill at your res, and you'd get very playable frame rates with something like a GTX260 / HD4870 - or a 5770 if you're after DX11.

£150 is extremely tempting but having read and thought some more I think I'm changing my mind to lean towards the 1gb version as I've seen it can make a difference even in my res and I'd rather be over the 30fps mark than under it on certain settings, plus it offers more return in future in dx11 titles.

Ideally I'd like to purchase one that has a good warranty, 3 years would be good.
