What is it with people and dubs

To be honest the english dubs were pretty good in this, but I grew up to watching the original film/series in it's original language with subs so I was used to the voice, it's like having a new actor replace someone in a show going to english voices.

Yeah, understandable. I just got this feeling no one wants to give dubs a chance, they hear it first time, and 'thats absolute bullocks' lol. Looks like none of you are the type of people I've come accross in anime forums, what a wrong place for me to post this.
 
I tried to be impartial... But for the love of god English dubbing just sounds terrible and weak and lacks zero emotion in my opinion.
 
I don't watch anime at all so can't comment specifically about that. But in general I much prefer watching foreign language films with subtitles rather than some poorly dubbed version. It just feels more authentic.

Yeah I totally agree movie wise, not so sure about animes though.

This. I'd always be too afraid that something is being "lost" with respect to the tone of voice, or the emotion. It seems fair to assume that the original (voice or actual) actors are more connected to the writer/director, so they will have a better idea about what was intended.
 
I don't know anything about anime, but I like films in their original voice track and subtitles. I like to hear the intonation and the timing of the way they speak, and effectively hear the actors act. Reading sub titles is hardly taxing and doesn't really detract from the action for me.
 
Give me subtitles and the original voice track any day. Dubbing just loses the emotion the original voices convey.

I had a quick flick through and it was utterly, utterly disturbing.
 
I find that the English voice-acting is absolutely pants. They don't get the emotions right and it sounds very, very false. When the Japanese voice-actors are doing an angry scene, they really sound angry. :eek:

in things like anime i dont even see how it would matter. surely the imaging is done and then a script is given to voice actors to speak over it ? its basically japanese voice actor vs english speaking voice actor

Anime is, like, cartoons, right? As already stated, no matter if the Western aficionado wants to treat it as serious art, it's animated entertainment for a mass audience. With nude Lolitas, sometimes.
 
I'd generally prefer to watch with subtitles for films than dubbing as it tends to better convey the correct mood of the film although the dubbing is often unintentionally hilarious which can be worth it anyway. However this is in reference to foreign language films rather than anime which is something I've never properly understood or been interested in (Studio Ghibli films aside and I'd argue they're just great cartoon animation rather than any of the other connotations that the term anime sometimes comes with).

What was it called? I've had the misfortune of reading some manga that got quickly thrown out after doing so. :p
