I'm in a similar position; I cant decide between Sky and Virgin.
Just moved into a flat and I was intending on just phoning each of them up and haggling each of them down with each others prices until one of them gives up but if there are clear benefits with one over the other..

I just got the V+ HD box not long ago. Always been with virgin however.
I find it brilliant! Being able to record 2 programs and watch a third is awsome ( 80 hours recording ). The box its self is very quick and the quality in HD is amazing.
For £62 a month i get unlimited phone calls, up to 20mb net and all the channels appart from movies and sport ( Even get ESPN HD for free ).
Just phone up and haggle them around. It might take a while.

Agree on the V+ box being excellent. I find it very responsive and reliable.
I pay just over £50 p.m. for:
- M TV
- Phone line with anytime inclusive national calls
- 20 Mb broadband
- V+ (£5 per month extra for M TV customers)
That includes a run-of-the-mill 'loyalty' discount.

Virgin is better, Sky is a rip off,they make you may for services you don't want.

Yup, Movies and Sports are a lot more expensive on VM but you do get ESPN (+ Classic and America) free when you get the XL package. And obviously one of the main advantages is VM's VOD, which is pretty useful.
Unless on the XL package which is free, a V HD or a V+HD (PVR) will cost your an extra £5 a month + £50 activation cost. Although you can usually get them to waiver these costs.
Also note that there is a difference in picture quality between the HD channels on VM and on Sky - personally i prefer VM but it's all personal preference.

I originally had Sky for a few years then switched over to Virgin, primarily because I had broadband with them and they offered me a great deal for the TV package, broadband and phone. I find the V+ box excellent and customer service is normally quite good, however there are a few things I wished virgin had:
Sky Player - Virgin has no current service that allows you to watch your channels online although they might be introducing the Virgin player by the end of the year.
Sky Interactive - I have all the Sky Sports channels on Virgin, however sometimes Sky sports extra shows several games at once on that one channel, on Virgin this will default to one game whereas in Sky you have a selection of maybe four or more games, also access to fan zone, different angles, views etc.
Virgin doesn’t have any of the Sky Movie HD or Sky Sport HD channels, not sure if this will change
Virgin does have a very good catch-up on TV demand service and you have access to many shows and series free of charge also.
The only reason I lean towards virgin is because of the broadband if I was only interested in TV then I get Sky.

Virgin are getting the Sky HD channels shortly though. That makes it a no-brainer for me as I already have Virgin internet. I'll be switching as soon as my Sky contract is up.
