Cheap convertible hard-top

For that money you'll struggle with a hard top, consider Coupe's or soft tops

MR2 from 2000 on is a good suggestion

The sill doesnt look damaged in the pic anyway, chances are if thats straight and its just panels then it will be repaired

There is nothing else for the money with this roof. The 206CC was only the second mainstream car released with a roof like this, the other being the SLK which you wont get for 2-4k.

You will now get a plethora of people recommending MX5's and E36 3 Series because they had a hard top - which they did, but it takes 30 minutes to remove by hand and requires storage when not in use, so more for winter use rather than as a solution to having convertible but living in the ghetto.
The Vauxhall Tigra(shudder) has a folding metal roof at one stage of it's life

Yup, but quite a bit later than the 206 and SLK which as Fox says were the first real mainstream cars to have them.

Anyway I know it's being repaired but as a bit of a leftfield suggestion I'd have gone with a Copen :)

I had a test drive in a tigra once, it was actually quite nice :). Then the salesman broke the roof so I bught a 182 instead.

How about the latest shape MR2? It will be the top end of the budget but supposed to be quite a hoot to drive. Looks are a bit...er... subjective though :D

I see the OP is getting his car repaired;

MR2 has a separate hard top though. Which you normally take off and store for the summer. I can see it being a huge pain putting it on every night. It also takes two people to do. Good car though.

I've only owned a mk1 but that certainly didn't take 2 people. You're not thinking of an MX5 are you?

I'm referring to this one:

Depends on how big / capable OPs friend is. I know when my sister had one there was no way she could manage to lift, carry and position the hardtop on her own. It's no so much that it's very heavy. It's not. However a slight mis-judgement or a bash when manouvering and you could end up damaging it.
