Hay all.

Just thinking that would it be best to hold off buying a £320 (5870) card now and wait for ati new cards to come out ?

But even a 4890 going to cost just over £100 new

I have 9600gt atm but really wan't to play metro 2033 again and i don't think the 9600gt would run that on good settings at all.

So maybe cheap second hand 4870/4890 would be a little upgrade in fps from 9600gt?

I just got a feeling if i did buy £320 card now and the new ones come out soon after would be better and about the same price as card out today.

Thanks.

I would wait.

I would hate to buy a new card now and in a few weeks or so time something better and faster will come out.

If you want a card now that will play Metro 2033, then get a 5770 :) i have 2 of them in CF and they are great. Although i didnt need a second to run Metro 2033, i just felt like adding a 2nd was the right thing to do

What's the rest of the rig? Also what resolution are you playing at?

May be better off looking at other components before such a severe upgrade..

On this whole 'right time to upgrade' business, when the '6870' or whatever comes out, then..well..maybe you should wait until the 7870. the grass is always greener on the other side :)

If you're having performance problems or your 9600 doesnt cut it (which i doubt it will on metro (...if you're that keen to play metro :p) ) then by all means upgrade and try to do it cost effectively. The best option really depends on the rest of your rig and the resolution you play at. If you're worried about the money though, then the 5870 isnt probably the best option :D

Im happy I bought my 5870 at the start of May.

I'd say don't speculate too much, just get what you want now, otherwise you get caught in a never ending loop of wait and see.

Anyone who bought a 58xx on release has had great value from it, as the prices are still pretty much exactly the same.

Well it i don't upgrade a lot and i like to keep what i have got for as long i can. Still got my 7800GS agp :D but thats broken :(

I don't have lots of money and this is why when spending a lot on a card i just like to be 100% is all.

I am uprading everything atm i have got most of the bits but by next week i should have all of it :)

(I have already for new pc)

Coolermaster CM-690 II Advanced
Gigabyte 790FXT-UD5P
CPU Cooler Titan Fenrir
OCZ modxstream pro 600w
Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Samsung SH-S223L/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA

(Need to buy)

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition
OCZ Reaper Low-Latency 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 12800C6 (1600MHz)

And a GPU

From experience its better to buy the best on (or very near) release. That way you can enjoy top end hardware for longer whilst still having it retain its value for longer as well.

However If you buy components on a need only basis then just buy the best you can at the current time (whilst allowing some slight consideration for the refresh depending on how long you can hold out for it).

Either way you just need to way up how much you need a new card with how long you can hold out for the refresh.

You could go for an interim solution like a 4890 as you say, but I wouldn't if you don't upgrade a lot and only do so when necessary.

If it were me I'd go for a 5870v2 all things considered.

Thx Nocky24 5870v2 would do me for a long time i would think :)

I was thinking well instead of the 4890 maybe a 5770 now and then crossfire later when i need it if my PSu upto the job ?

OCZ modxstream pro 600w.

I take it the 5770 only needs 1 6pin connector.

Yeh in that case go for the 5770 with CF in mind idea :) All depends on your budget as well, but i suppose that way you'll have the best of both worlds. It'll tide you over for now and you can potentially end up with something easily comparable to a 5870 when needed. Also your psu will be fine mate.

would buying another 9600GT be out of the question as you could probably get one for less than £65 for some SLi action.

Well it i don't upgrade a lot and i like to keep what i have got for as long i can.

Definitely steer clear of getting a 4870/90 then. By your own admission you don't have lots of money which means that it'd be crazy to purchase a stopgap card, thus restricting your budget when you want to do the 'proper' upgrade.

Also one thing to bear in mind is that typically when new cards come out they carry a price premium and stock shortage; in the short term the previous generation won't budge in price much so if you have visions of the 5870 suddenly dropping £100 overnight, forget about it.

Just thought the new cards would be not far off what prices are now when they come out.

But that could be anytime so i will get a asus 5870 and start playing some games woop woop :D

I not 100% sure on asus 5870 version 2 does it have cheaper parts/build build quality then the 5870 reference design.

Thanks

get a second hand 4870 for £60 from MM cant go wrong as i dont see them dropping much more in price as they out perform a 260gtx and they still selling for around £100 second hand the 4870 even the 512mb are powerful cards for the price runs all my games on my second rig on my 1080p full settings low AA/AF but a 1gb would handle the high res+eyecandy better

hope this helps

I think i best spend the money before my GF starts buying more house stuff like we did last time lol

She was window shopping online just incase i did buy a cheap card now lol

put an ad in wanted section for a hd4870 you'll get one for £60 maybe a 1gb for that price if your good at haggaling
plus what the worst case sell it on fleebay and make £10 back on it to cover postage and you hav'nt losted a penny
then splash out when the next gen comes out if its any good :) its all win win win my freind
or you could just add another £60 later on for 2x4870 crossfire which is still damn good performance by todays standards (beats 5870 if iam right)
as you mobo can support and if your not bothered about dx11 or physx and would perfer the extra cash then buying the next gen cards as the price is always sky high when they 1st get realeased
