How do I overclock my 5850?

I have recently bought an Asus Direct CU Top 5850 (because it cost very little more than the reference card), apparently these are quite decent overclockers. I currently have it running as standard (765mhz gpu clock, 1125mhz memory clock)

For now, I don't want to change any voltages. I have found some overclocks on this review http://www.pureoverclock.com/review.php?id=954&page=15

Can I just use catalyst control center to increase the gpu clock to 900mhz, and memory to 1200mhz... and then test it? (run furmark for 15mins)... or is there something else I should do?

thanks

Just ran furmark for 15 minutes. 900mhz gpu clock, 1200mhz memory

Furmark settings:

Stability test, Log Gpu temperature, Xtreme Burning Mode
Fullscreen, 1920x1080, MSAA 8x

Average fps: 10
Max Temp: 71C

is the overclock safe?

I would suggest using the Unigine Heaven benchmark for establishing a stable gpu overclock,I found when overclocking my XFX 5850 that furmark showed no artifacting when testing overclocked gpu@950,but with the same settings Unigine artifacted almost immediately, unfortunately my card is a non-reference design so over volting the gpu is not possible as far as I know.

Yours looks like a reference design so you may manage 1ghz! Use unigine aswell as furmark when testing your clock though, all the best. http://unigine.com/download/

i cant even get afterburner to keep my settings so im stuck with the ati overdrive limit of 775 - 1125

Have you edited the msi afterburner ini file to allow 'unofficial overclocking'? settings will just revert to default if you don't edit the file.

nope :) ill have a look at doing that now, thanks

There should be a line in the ini file that reads 'AllowUnofficialOverclocking=0' change 0 to 1 then click 'save as' in file menu, then choose 'all files' when prompted and finally select to 'overwrite existing file'.

i got one of these saturday all i will say is prepare for major problems ahead!!
let me explain

These cards overclock stupidly well ablight 1 minor problem (actually major)You can only overvolt the card using the asus software msi afterburner won't allow you to do it as asus used different voltage regulators to make the voltage more stable than reference designs. Why does this suck so bad you ask. Well the smartdoctor suite is one of the worst programs i have ever used. It will cause fallout 3 to not work at all,the card will sometimes default to silly voltages on it's own i set mine to 1.18 volts booted into windows and smart doctor decided to put it up to 1.25v many times it lost it's overclock profile memory so i would boot into a stock gpu, the program will sometimes dissapear offscreen thus needing a restart the list goes on and on it's utterly terrible. I've already e-mailed asus about it and unfortunately afterburner dosen't support our gpu properly yet. the only way around it is to make a custom afterburner config file adding lines of code to recognize the voltage regulators even then it will only allow you to overclock by 100Mv which is .1 volt over stock. If it's anything like mine you might get lucky and get it stable at 850-900/1125-1200 depending on temp i would reccomend running Eunigene 2.1 and resident evil 5 benchmark as the resi 5 benchmark artifacted and crashed my card where eunigene didn't

Need any further help then let me know

This dosen't work on our cards at all. The maker of afterburner said they should be adding support for it within the next couple of months depending on how much time he gets and how many new card versions are out by then

thanks for the replies. I thought this was stable, however in game I am having a lot of freezing/stuttering, and so have gone back to stock settings. What should I do now? The box says "800mhz sorted"... so should I try an 800mhz gpu clock, without changing the memory clock?

1.8 will kill the chip sooner rather than later. Assuming the hardware would even let you truly set it so high, regardless of what its showing on screen.

LOL'z just realised i ment 1.18 volts 1.8 volts would be just silly surely you should have known that :D

anyway edited the post to reflect the error it should now read right 1.18 and 1.25

ok i cam confirm i now have limited voltage control in msi afterburner with a 5850 direct cu using a simple line instead of a whole file

need to check a few things tho before i share as i need to see how far the steps are get back to you shortly

ok sorted altho you can only add 100mv (will be working on this later to see if i can adjust it more) at the minute you can go from 1.118volts to 1.218volts highly doubt it will be enough for 1000core+ but should see a stable 900/950 on the core here is how to enable voltage control for the 5850 direct cu ONLY (PLEASE NOTE THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO ALL CARDS JUST THE 5850 DIRECT CU'S)

step
1. go into your program folder and locate msi afterburner
2.open MSIAfterburner.CFG
3.Look for enable unnoficial overclocking and replace the 0 with a 1
4.click file, save as,then click save as type and select all files, click save and confirm it will overwrite the old data so click yes
5.now goto the profiles folder in the main msiafterburner folder open it
6.open this CFG file VEN_1002&DEV_6899&SUBSYS_034E1043&REV_00&BUS_1&DEV_0&FN_0
7.At the very bottom of all the text type

[Settings]
uP6208_Detection = 1

Don't forget the spaces between the = sign

8.Do the file save as thing, you just did it a few moments ago save as all files.
9.open afterburner you should now see voltage control LIT up you can adjust from 0-100 each step represents 1Mv
stock voltage on 5850 direct cu is 1.118volts so one step would be 1.119, 2 steps would be 1.120 etc etc all the way upto 1.218volts

Hope this helps people who hate the smartdoctor software and are using direct cu 5850's

Hi,

I wondering if some one can answer a question for me

I've flashed my Gigabyte 5870 to Asus bios atiflash -f -p 0 xxx.bin ( .rom didn't work for me?) My ATI over drive my limit's are now: Core 1200 with Memory 1400. But in MSI AB im not getting any control over the voltage. I've also changed MSI AB .cfg file =0 to =1 and saved where necessary. But still no control over Voltage.

My overclocks are pretty limited as a cant increase the volt like on my cpu. 905/945 @ 1.2120 is all i can get without freezing. What am I doing wrong please?!

Thanks
