Today went with a bang!

On the road....
Had a violent blowout on my near side front tyre this morning, trundling along @ 50MPH, 8AM, heavy rush hour traffic on the A50 heading toward Stoke on Trent.

Suddenly an almighty "Bang!" and my truck , utterly without warning, slews violently into lane #2, my rear view mirrors full of debris, clouds of dust and tyre smoke.

I seem to have just "caught" the rig in time to stop me crossing the central reservation, somehow just knocking my OSF indicator off the truck and - bar tyre explosion - no other damage whatsoever!

As the tyre exploded and I slewed into the outside lane, I was utterly convinced I'd flattened whatever was along side me, thank God and by some miracle at that time of day, nothing was there.

When I finally came to a stop, I remember vaguely sitting in the truck for a few minutes and did not move at all..... Eventually, I think I came to my senses and got out of the truck and went to a Highways agency van that had by chance seen the entire incident and stopped behind me with his beacons on. He assured me I'd hit nothing - and was amazed I had not taken out nor crossed the armco barrier - and told me to get back in the truck.

I think I then chain smoked for about 20minutes - rolling a 'rolly up by hand with trembling hands is not easy,I assure you!

Nearly 12 hours on, my right arm is still shaking if I hold it out as such, strangely, not my left....??

By the time I got recovered back to the Scania dealers in Stoke and eventually back to my depot it was gone 1PM and I've elected to go home and take tomorrow off, I really did not fancy going out in another HGV today after that.

I have been driving HGV's for 14 years, Artics since 2004 and NEVER in that time have I felt so close to what I thought was quite literally it......

I am an EXTREMELY lucky chap and am going to get absolutely blasted tonight!

Apologies for the lousy pictures, my camera phone does not have an anti shake feature........

Lane 1 Closed.....

Normally, you can't see a trucks tyre from this angle, a fair bit of trim is missing here....

Just brushed the barrier enough to pop off my indicator, scuff it slightly, but not actually break it!!!

The underside of my cab, trashed by the exploding tyre, note the kink in the cab chassis (!)

Air lines from recovery truck to my trailer - the explosion seems to have severed an air line on my HGV as it had lost all of its own air pressure after the accident and did not want to "build it back up" again...

Beware HGV's out there people - what shocked me more than anything was how quickly the truck changed lane and , for a split second or so, there was absolutely sweet NOTHING I could do about it, as I say, thank God nobody was along side me.

i had one of those moments when the car i was in was T-boned at approximately 40mph or so comming off a dual carriageway slip road across a T junction.

Other driver ran the red light and smacked straight into the side of us, swung us round nearly 180 degrees and slammed the car into the kerb that hard it ripped the suspension to bits. Think a driveshaft or something came off.

We were of course fine, but its a horrible moment going from minding your own business to not knowing what way your pointing, or what the hell just happened.

Enjoy your day off, and calm your nerves ! :)

glad to hear nothing happened to you or anyone else! JUst shows when driving a piece of machinery like that you have to have full concentration at all times!

Had acfront blowout on a 7.5t double decker like a car transporter but carrying ULD's from the airport, very light cargo so long and tall, very scary experience

Do they still have to dismantle the rear diff so it doesn't lock up?

Yes, just the one on Scanias, not surprisingly, the wrecker driver took out the nearside one, not the offside.

£15k+ for a Scania "Opticruise" gearbox from what he said (!) - The recovery company is liable if this is not done and the tow trashes the transmission, which it, as I'm sure you know, would!

I would like to know what can actually tow such a huge truck?

ha ha expensive mistakes, never got a full HGV ticket but drove these for 5 years on and off on Gatwick Heathrow and Manchester airports, however ours were 7 units long just 7.5t very just

Glad your ok and no one was injured which is the most important thing.

What will your supervisors do about this? I assume nothing as it was just a blowout and not driver error.

Had to fill in an accident report, my depot Manager filled in the form for me as my hand was shaking too much to write! - tbh, its not much better when its not shaking! :o:D

To be fair to ESL (Eddie Stobart Ltd) who I work for, they were excellent, checked that I was OK, wanted me to goto Hospital for a check up - which I refused - and arranged for me to be picked up,promptly, from the Scania dealers and had absolutely no qualms with me requesting the rest of the week off.

It was not my fault - their description not mine - it happens, I don't always drive that truck, its impossible to know if the tyre has been weakened in some other incident (kerbing etc) and they were amazed that I had neither crossed the central reservation nor actually lost my load.

I am extremely thankful I had been driving artics for around 6 years constantly prior to this incident and had a reasonable idea how to keep it together enough to get back under control and stop safely.

Had this incident happened back in 2004 when I passed my C+E artic Licence, I truly dread to think what could and would have been the outcome.

You never stop learning behind the wheel, one hell of a lesson for me today.

The same thing came very close to removing 3 of us from the face of the earth when an artic burst a tyre and came right for us from the other side of the motorway, the whole rig went right over the central res like it didn't exist, still scares me today, horrid feeling when it was coming for us, i actually said "we are going to die aren't we", i 100% thought my number was up.

Glad your ok after that fella.

That must be one of those heart stoppers.

Glad you're alright. That is quite some destruction right there  Your truck is going to need some extensive repairs!
