OCZ Reaper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C6

OCZ Reaper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C6

£162.98 inc

Anyone have problems with these
Hello momo56,

I'm confused what memory you are talking about now you mentioned gold? :D

The memory in your first post looks interesting, DDR3-1600 Cas 6 @ 1.65vDimm is certainly appealing for those obsessive tweakers like myself who like to squeeze those tiny extra bits of performance out a system . . . however one has to examine the performance difference and question if the OCZ Reaper DDR3 12800C6 is worth an extra 30% premium over something like this:

OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C8

£132.99 inc £124.98 inc This Week Only!

  • DDR3-1600 CAS 8 10.0 ns (192-bit) 19,200 MB/s (Gold)
  • DDR3-1600 CAS 6 7.5 ns (192-bit) 19,200 MB/s (Reaper)

So a slight reduction in latency and identical bandwidth, I think 7.5ns latency is nice but I don't think I would spend an extra £38 on this, if your a benchmarker/tweaker you could probably convince yourself the premium is worth paying? ;)

I suppose some of the additional cost of the Reapers is the added heatsink . . . . looks nice doesn't it! :) . . . but what does it actually do? . . . does DDR3 run hot in a average cooled case running at 1.65vDimm? . . . I don't think it does? . . . I don't think it actually "needs" a huge heatsink to perform without getting hot or run without error? . . . if your going to overclock and over-volt the sticks then yeah the huge heatsinks make sense, very nice in fact but for normal operation in an average cooled cased the regular "skinny" memory heatspreaders work fine!

The other thing that bugs me a tiny bit about the huge memory heatspreaders is that they seem to collide with a few Tower CPU heatsinks, at least on an AMD platform but I'm not sure how close the memory slots are too the CPU socket on the Intel platform? . . . it's not a problem for anyone using a standard/stock CPU heatsink fan but "maybe" a snag for someone AirCooling using a huge tower, on the AMD builds I did I was unable to use the memory slot closest to the CPU socket as the memory heatspreader clashed with the 120mm fan on the CPU heatsink . . .

This was with some Gskill Ripsaws which feature a larger than standard heatspreader but not as large as the OCZ reapers which would totally clash with the CPU heatsink/fan if fitted to the closest ram slot . . . only solution would be to move the 120mm fan to the other side, or use a different heatsink that didn't clash? . . or simply to use different memory featuring a standard heatspreader which does not clash in anyway? . . or just stick the memory in the next slots along and hope your go water cooling by the time you need to populate the remaining memory slots! :p

I'd be interested to know if any Intel® Core™ i7 owners can confirm if these huge heatsinked sticks of memory can be fitted in the slot closest to the CPU without clashing with their tower heatsink?

I use 6gb of the older cas7 reaper on an asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard, no compatibility issues, have mine running at 1547 mhz, 1.64 vdimm 7-7-7-24, i7 920 at 4ghz (4050 mhz, 21 x 193 bclk). Fit wise i have no problems either.

If i ever feel the need for 12bg of ram it will fit fine, cooler used is a Thermalright ultra extreme, though ill always be limited to 25mm fans, upon building this rig i mistakenly placed the ram in the wrong slots:o, ie one in the first bank nearest the cpu socket, at least though it let me know that 12gb would fit.

Ram fitted in the wrong slots

As you can just about make out in the above pic, even with the ram slotted incorrectly the dimm still avoids hitting the fan on the heatsink.

Hi everyone thanks for the detailed replies! :) I have a waterblock for the cpu the the height of the ram sinks aren't really an issue. The ocz gold ones that you sugessted I have seen people on forums complaining about RMA-ing so many. The reason I like the reaper is because of the low latencies. However I'll mainly use it for gaming and photo editing so does that mean I dont really need a low latency ? What latencies would you recommend to be acceptable.

Just a bit more info I currently have and i7 d0 at 4.2 ghz, asus rampage ii extreme, 2gb c9 1333 mhz samsung ram and a 4870 x2.

I plan to move to 64 bit once I get 6gb of ram.

that is exactly why i would pay a 30% premium for the reapers.

As a halfway house, OCZ platinums are pretty decent. Generally similar to golds, but with tighter timings (typically 7s as opposed to 9s) and same size heatsink as gold. However, there doesnt seem to be the some complaints about plats as there are golds, so i guess OCZ pay more attantion to their QA/QC with the plats

Just so you know I have a dual channel kit and I can only get 7-7-7-24 timings on mine even though they should be 6-8-6-24. Still great value though.
