What is it with people and dubs

Dubbing can change the original character's persona loads, and for some reason when the American's dub anime they always want to do a 'token black person' voice!

LOL just reminded myself of IT Crowd.

SUBTITLES?!?! I CAN'T WATCH AND READ AT THE SAME TIME!!!

Give me subtitles and the original voice track any day. Dubbing just loses the emotion the original voices convey.

Plus lots of dubs have crap voice acting, crap voices, and sometimes even change the meaning by Americanising the jokes and speech

how do you know the jap version isnt terrible voice acting too ? a lot of our own cartoons have awful voice acting so why not theirs ?

i prefer subs with original voices aswell, cant stand when i'm watching an anime/film and the original audio has been replaced with awfull acents and voiceovers. though there are a few exceptions and there are a few dubs that i dont mind at all such as cowboy bebop and the ghost in the shell ones.

Most of them are just cheaply done, and awful compared to the quality of the original voiceover, thats why.

A good high budget dub meets the quality of the original, the problem is they are few and far between.

The main problem is using stupid "cartoon" voices when they are clearly not called for.

I used to prefer the subs, (and if I'm actually just watching it i still do(, but now mostly i have them on the second screen while doing other things so the dubs are better (as i can't read both screens at once).

But the crappy American voice actors (some however are dubbed by decent ones) are annoying a lot of the time

Listening to english takes far more effort and concentration than reading (english or dutch).

Some series do the dubs well ( eg. Dragonball) but others are terrible, the Japanese versions simply sound better.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why people hate dubbed anime/games so much. They say it sounds better in japanese. I dunno about the rest of you but I find female japanese voices a little too "girly" and the males sound like they have to rush through every piece of text. Everywhere I go I see the same thing posted, 'dubs suck' and so on. Could it be the ones saying it are all from Japan? You watch anime to watch, you don't watch anime to read at least I don't. If I wanted to read I'd read the manga. How can anyone enjoy watching anime when there eyes have to be at the bottom of the screen reading, just too much hassle and I oh did I mention I can't stand the japanese voices.

Thats a load of bollix, its sounds better dubbed but you gotta have the right voices if you know what I mean :S

how do you know the japanese voice over isnt in stupid cartoon voices though ?

do you speak japanese and have knowledge of japanese accents ? i imagine whoever pays for or is in charge of the english voiceover does

I can watch anime in Japanese but I definitely prefer it in English, it allows me to concentrate more on the visuals especially when I'm watching it in HD.

I have watched a few badly dubbed titles in my time but I still probably prefer it to reading subtitles.

I don't watch anything foreign unless it's dubbed because CBA reading subs whilst I'm trying to watch a film. The only people who says dubs suck are fanboys, and lets face it, they haven't even had sex yet, so who cares what they think.

I don't even realise that I'm reading the subs it's that natural.

You're doing it wrong....

:)

For the record, I've had sexual intercourse with a lady.

This, entirely.

Reading subtitles in no way detracts from a film's visuals. Realistically, you barely even rtealise they're there. Your brain processes the reading much more quickly than it does the visuals. Anyone who complains about "reading" when they should be watching etc, in my mind, is a moron.

CBA? so you're basically admitting you're a bit, shall we say "slow"... as fubsy said above, it takes no effort at all and you soon forget they're even there.

edit: damnit, i'm a bit slow as well. :p

I wouldn't go as far as saying what you said last ( it's what you're used to I guess), but I agree.

Concentrating on the voices IS FAR harder and more distracting than reading the subs quickly.

Nothing slow about wanting to watch the visuals without having to look away and read every couple of seconds. It's far easier to allow 2 sense to do one thing each, rather than one sense to try and take in two things.

At the same time, you're also having to try and block out the foreign langage which is often distracting, and then input emotion into the text you're reading, as in some anime, emotional tone in the voice is often hard to distinguish.

To be honest, any Anime dubbed into english that is worth watching, will have had the original creators working alongside the dub team to create a top notch US/Eng version with excellent voice overs.

most of the times animes that are dubbed have completely different dialogue compared tot he subbed animes .... i would rather watch an anime in subtitles and in the original voice any-day of the week .
a subbed anime will always sound better , the japs show real emotion instead of the boring and awkward sounding dubs .

can you imagine an English voice over for zoro or luffy , it would not sound right regardless of who is playing the part , also a dubbed anime is heavily edited .
