Hi all,

Here are the main parts of my rig:
Intel Dual core @2.66Ghz
Asus P5E (X38)
Nvidia 8800GT
Seasonic S12 650W
4gb DDr2 @800Mhz
3 sata HDD
2 optical drives
All works fine as it is.

I recently bought a Radeon HD 5850 toxic 2gb to replace my aging 8800gt.
I connected it to the PSU (2 x 12v 6 pins connectors), inserted it firmly in the PCIe 2.0 16x port turned the PC on.. and .. no POST!

- I checked all the connections.
- I unplugged all the hdds but my system one, unplugged the optical drives.
- I flashed the Asus P5e to the latest Bios version. I even flashed it with the Rampage RoG bios (this P5e is the same of the Maximus formula x48 - x48=x38, as I was told it could help - it works fine but didn't help)
- I tried many times to shut down & turn on the PC. It never boots up. All the while the Radeon's fan spins at 100% of it's speed, the PC won't POST and I get no display.

I got the 5850 tested on a friend's PC and it works fine.

I'm now aware that the s12 is not on ATI's recommended list, but it seems to have the right specs to power the card and the rest of my PC. Could it nonetheless be the problem? (Assuming it's not faulty)

Could the problem be the P5e? any similar experience as mien with this card?

Is this Sapphire 5850 Toxic an hyper sensitive PoS that requires very minute voltage settings?

I unfortunately have no PC speaker connected to the MB which i know could help in order to get beep codes and will try to rip one off an old case, but for now.. any advice?

Cheers!

my 5770 and old ASUS board didn't play nice with each other either, if it works in your mate's rig it is not the card. Assuming you flashed the bios with the 8800 GT in? Did you load optimised defaults after? Did you reset bios before booting with 5850?

Got the PC speaker connected now, and the beep code says "No vga detected". Coudl have guessed that :)

I did Flash the Bios with the 8800gt in, and did cleared CMOS as well, before flashing the Bios, as a test, and after having flashed the Bios. Am running on default frequencies, RAM and CPU settings.

Do you have to flash/clear the bios/cmos everytime you put in a new graphics card? Can't you just uninstall the old gfx drivers, install the new card and install the new drivers? :S

Rather confused with all the bios flashing when upgrading vga...

No, you don't have to, except when stuff don't work, and you're trying to make it work. :-) Flashing to a recent bios allows you to ensure that your MB is as much compatible as possible with recent stuff :) Not a warranty of success! ;)

An x38 board is going to have two full pcie2x16 lanes.

Get the 8800gt in the first, and the 5850 in the second. See if win7 is happy to talk to both - you can install both ati and nvidia cards at the same time in w7. Even in winXP you should get both cards detected even if you couldnt install (sucessfully) two sets of drivers.

You havent mentioned setting your pcie lane to 101.
You did mention seating "firmly", but you dont confirm you've definitely been over this _multiple_ times - probably have if you had it in a friend's PC.

JGet the 8800gt in the first said:
Because my 8800GT is so large (custom pipe heatsink and fan) I cannot fit both at the same time in my p182 case (2nd PCIe port is too close to the PSU compartment of the case. However I just fitted in a 6600GT in the 2nd PCIe port, and the ATI in the primary. The ATI is not detected in Win7, and the fan keeps spinning as fast as it can.

You havent mentioned setting your pcie lane to 101.
Did it - no change

For sure, *multiple* times is the least I can say :)

Welshdragon, I also resetted the Cmos after having put the ATI card in. no luck there.

I think with your advice I have tried everything now, except using a different PSU which I cannot do without buying one first. I would just like to confirm a couple of things, before ordering a new MB.

> This is my PSU . Can someone confirm it has enough Amperage on the 12v to power the 5850 Toxic?

> Should this card work well with the ATI?

> I haven't yet completely decided, but I could maybe go for this bundle of joy
Anyone uses either one of the proposed MBs with the Radeon 5850? Any recommendation?

My brothers old corsair 520 modular had that issue. He said it didnt work. I tested it. It did... until you needed the 6pin gfx card connector.

Looks like you have tested all that you can. Most people would send it back under the 7 day change of mind statutory, rather than back on the basis of suspected fault. Another brand might work on your mobo/psu setup.

Provided its not been 7 days since the day of delivery yet.

i'd cancel the order if you can , at least initially, maybe order some molex to 6pin pci-e leads, and see if ya mate would let you borrow his psu first.

i had a 5770 that never worked on my old mobo ended up buying a whole new rig it was the fact it used a nforce 400 chipset driver but lots of people have problems with older boards not running the newest pci-e 2.0/2.1 graphics cards. If it works in your friends rig it won't be the card will be either your PSU or the mobo and the latest drivers for your mobo where december 2008 so can rule them out helping at all. When i emailed asus about my 5770 they replied it would not work on full stop.

Hope you get it sorted

At this stage i'm 100% sure that my new GC works (tested on friend's PC).
Starting from there (and from the hours spent already trying every basic troubleshooting one could think of), it could either be a rather strange issue with the Mobo - not unheard of, cf previous post from bigjimmyauk) or my PSU doesn't deliver enough Amps on the 12v, using the 2 6-pins leads I have or using standard 4 pins molex or a any combination of both.

OC Uk had already shipped my order this morning (thanks!), so I will know very soon!
If the new PSU or/and new mobo don't fix it, I'll eat me **lls. (just an expression, don't hold me to that!)

Hey folks, So new PSU is now installed and the Radeon 5850 miraculously started to work. Not enough Amps on the 12 volts rails of the Seasonic S12 Energy plus! Hope this saves somebody else some time and effort!
