Today went with a bang!

You are very lucky m8, and like you say very lucky not to have hit anyone, hope you get over this soon and back on the road.

I've had a lorry tyre blow right in front of my eyes.

I was sitting in traffic leading up to the port of Dover, and a truck tyre to my front / left blew. It was pretty shocking, there was a visible shock wave.

Glad to hear you're O.K, is 50mph the limit on those beasties then?

I believe 60mph is the limit for trucks on a motorway and 50mph on a dual carriageway (see S124 of the Highway Code) although many trucks say that they are limited to 56mph irrespective.

R420LA6X2/4MNA - glad to hear you're ok and that it was only the truck that was physically damaged.

It amazes me that you were able to maintain control of the truck, especially with a load that heavy. I imagine that once your direction had been altered by the blow-out and your ability to steer seriously compromised that the truck would have just wanted to go straight ...pushed along by the weight of the load. Nice save.

Think I seen your lorry (Or one of your companies atleast) in south Wales last week, wednesday night..! Looks pretty awesome

We have had our delivery wagons blow there tyres and collapse wheels whilst delivering at our place. Not once have anyone come and towed it home, a tye fitter from 'Bach comes along in his truck and fits a whole new wheel and tyre.

Good save anyway!!

Ouch, so that'll be the worst possible tyre to lose?

Oh, I'd been meaning to ask you this; I've seen about 10 clusters of skid marks that veer off into the hard shoulder this week, are these where the air line/s to the trailer bust open/off?

Might want to go have that check up, something about your right arm shaking and not your left doesn't sound right to me. Isn't half a side not being even something to do with a stroke?

Well done keeping it in control, good man.

The same thing came very close to removing 3 of us from the face of the earth when an artic burst a tyre and came right for us from the other side of the motorway, the whole rig went right over the central res like it didn't exist, still scares me today, horrid feeling when it was coming for us, i actually said "we are going to die aren't we", i 100% thought my number was up.

I was once following a lorry and one of it's tyres blew, absolutely showered my windscreen with bits of rubber and the amount of smoke was unbelievable. I couldn't see a thing and was terrified I was going to plough into the back of him, so I just did my best to brake gently until I could see what was going on and get past him. Fortunately the driver held it together really well and made it over to the hard shoulder without any bother.

I'm glad no one was hurt mate. Sounds like it really shook you up

A few years ago I was lane 3, another car in lane 2 and a truck in lane 1.

One of the middle tyres (right hand side), blew, was such a loud bang, windscreen covered in rubber / dust. The driver in lane 2 swerved into my lane, I had to move to the very edge of the lane and hoot my horn to let him know I was there. The gf said he was about 2 inches away from our car

At the time, I didn't stop, I just kept driving to the next service station.

Wow nasty accident that but good to hear all is well. Must be pretty damn scary having zero control of something that heavy for a while. Will make sure to never hang around next to truck for too long, i know my dad blasts past them for this reason :)

Either front is a bad one to blow, you get thrown left or right depending which pops, had my nearside tyre blown, I'd have been down the embankment & on my side I'd guess, either that or pile into a bridge support ,tree etc etc.

As for the skid marks, yes some kind of full on braking without ABS assistance, an air line splitting will cause the brakes to lock on, as will a siezed drum / caliper etc.

how does the tow truck hook up to the cab is there a special dock?

The recovery truck extends whats essentially a giant "T bar" under the truck and wraps chains around the front suspension, then lifts the cab up, if you look at the picture here, it only lifts the front axle though, letting the rear axles of the unit take the weight.

Its not lifting much weight at all in actual fact, it certainly has to pull a fair weight though, circa 60 tons "Train weight" for the wrecker truck and my cab & loaded trailer I'd guess.

I know I'm a royal pain in the arse on these forums going on about trucks all the time, its appreciated on my part greatly, that when it comes to the crunch (almost!), the "hostile enviroment" thats otherwise known as OC/UK Motors is actually a very friendly, hospitable place, with a good hearted communtiy.

Sincerely, thanks to all for the sentiments. :)
