iPhone 4G or 3GS?

Hi all,

I'm due an upgrade with T Mobile at this point in time. I'm currently on the FlexT 25 tariff complete with a USB mobile broadband dongle all of which costs me @£37 per month ( T Mobile business customer ). The phone I originally got with the contract right back at the start was a Vario IV but for the past year or so I have been using the T Mobile SIM in an iPhone 2G that a friend gave me.

I fancy another iPhone and as far as I know I can get a 3GS as a free upgrade. But I'm not sure about the 4G and price, availability etc?. I plan to nip into town later and speak to them in my local shop about it.

Wondering if it's worth pushing for a 4G and paying the extra for it or just going for a 3GS?. What do you think?. 4G really a huge jump from a 3GS?. I'm probably going to see a difference going from a 2G anyway??!!!.

If you like taking video and pics with your phone then get the iPhone 4 (it's not '4G'. That implies it has 4g capability, which it doesn't). It's also a little faster due to the 1ghz processor. If these things aren't important to you then I'd go with the cheaper 3GS.

Personally, if you like the style of the iPhone, have a look at the Samsung Galaxy S. It's better than a 3GS in every way and around the same price.

I think the choice is between the iPhone 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S. You'll be just wasting your money on old technology if you plump for the 3GS.

Bear in mind that three years after it came out the 2G iPhone is no longer supported and the 3G (2 years on) only has part of the features of iOS 4.

Next year the 3GS will be two years old and it's likely Apple will start restricting features when iOS 5 comes along to try and encourage people to upgrade.

Cheers guys.

Not long back from the T Mobile shop, guy told me that their tariffs have all changed now and FlexT is no longer offered.

So the deal I'm getting offered an iPhone 4 16Gb on a £45 per month contract and the phone would cost me £59. 1200 minutes and 500 free texts per month plus 750Mb data allowance and 1x of T Mobiles “Flexible Boosters”. He said that both the 3GS and the iPhone 4 would not be arriving at T Mobile stores until the 20th of July. I didn't ask but I assume if I wanted to go for one and get one on that date I'd need to reserve it or something similar?.

He also tried his best to steer me towards the Desire saying that it was a viable alternative to the iPhone. And he also suggested the Samsung Galaxy S.

He's right, the Desire would cost you almost half the amount of the iPhone (£25 contract, free phone). I chose one over an iPhone.

I moved from a 3G to a iPhone 4. I used to think it was the download speeds which were slow for stuff like google maps. But its actually the processor.

Not sure how it compares to the 3GS. Though the general consensus is the battery is a lot better on the 4

i have been playing with the iphone 4 and the 3GS while in the shop yesterday.... i walked out with the HTC desire and i love it.

When did they say you could have the iphone 4?

As for the '4G' implies 4g, surely that's rubbish. It's the 4th generation

Yep, apple probably would have called it 4G if they wanted. However, they are probably saving it for the 4G network capable iphone which may come out next year.

It's not, they'd have more info online if it was that close!
The delay must be causing some loss of customers for t-mob

Yeah, he said something along the lines of "We have been told from 'on high' that it will be the 20th of July that the 4 arrives in store". He said the 3GS handsets would also be expected at that time too.

I've been happy with T Mob for a few years now so not that fussed about moving away, I'd rather stay with them but I admit I was tempted to go elsewhere. I'm planning on nipping back into town to the store tomorrow or Tuesday to sort out a new contract and iPhone 4 so I'll see what else they have to say at that point.

Yeah, sounds about right.
I'm waiting for the release so I can upgrade from my 3GS on t-mob.
For me the 4 is so much better, well impressed with my friends

The iPhone 4 definately. It's a real step up hardware wise from the 3Gs (well not the processor but the rest), worth the extra as it makes a mediocre phone pretty good.

Having said that I saw two iPhone 4's today and I have to say I take back my suggestion that they were really nice looking. They still are but they actually look a bit plain and boring. (First time i've seen them in the flesh)

Went back into the local TMobile shop today with a view to finding out more info on the 4. Spoke to a different person this time who seemed a wee bit more knowledgeable than the first guy I spoke to at the weekend. This 22nd July date is only what the stores "have heard" on the grapevine which I found a bit bizarre. I would have thought something only a week or so away from hitting the shelves would have resulted in their staff knowing some rather more concrete info. He also said when I pointed at the price plan I wanted to sign up for that "Those are not actually finalised tariffs". Said they were "kinda finalised" whatever that means?!!!.

Most disappointing thing was that when I asked as an existing customer is it possible to reserve or put my name down for one I was told "Nope". Only thing you can do is fill in the online "Register interest" form on the TMobile website and keep your fingers crossed. :(

Finally, he said the availability at the store would be very limited and on a "first come, first served" basis. When asked about when the next batch would arrive if I missed out on one from the initial batch he was guessing at around 3-4 weeks later. So I'm not sure what the point of filling in the online form to register interest is ( perhaps it is simply to give TMob an indication of geographical interest? ).

What a carry on to try and blag a phone!!!. :D

Was tempted to go into the O2 shop on the way back to the car but as I already said, I'd rather stay with TMob if possible and also, the O2 offers and deals don't appear to be as good as the TMob ones, although from the above, this remains to be seen.

I know the Apple availability thing is thin on the ground for the 4 going by previous service providers getting them in stock and out the door but not being able to put ones name down for one as a current long standing customer is annoying.

Price plans have been finalised, they are on the website. You toto the register interest page then scroll down.

No upgrade deals though, that's from t-mob upgrades
