So, my PC desk has got boring, I want to spruce it up. Thing is, its MDF with a glossed pine styled veneer. The metal bits are a nice satin grey, so I was thinking of painting the 'wood' a nice matt or satin black. What is the best way to go about this?

Also when you paint it then I recommend using a very small roller. It will give a far better finish than a brush (will obviously need a brush for small tricky places too).

Sand the surface down and then use a gloss undercoat and top coat. You'll probably need a couple (or more) of coats of each and as said apply with the foam rollers you can get, not a paintbrush. You'll need to make sure you haven't got any runs and it'll probably be a good idea to lightly sand down each coat before you put the top coat on.

If its finished with plastic the paint may peel off.

You could always try Fablon. lol. I know its retro but you can get loads of great colors and stuff.

You will more likely find that the veneer isn't veneer more than likely it is a printed paper 'foil' wrap with a gloss coating sprayed on to it.

Use a fine sandpaper to dull the surface allowing the paint to key in.
Use a good quality primer followed by a good quality undercoat.(ie not B&Q or Homebase specials, use Dulux or something along those lines.....cheap paints are cheap because they have poor pigmentation and are generally crap).
then a couple of coats of satinwood black.

apply these using a microfibre mini roller as this will leave as near a perfect finish as you will get without resorting to spraying.
