Just impuse bought a 13" MBP - what next?

I received my MB Pro last night, so have only had a couple of hours on it.. and already im loving the trackpad gestures.. and most impressive thing is the four finger swipe down (or was it up?) that shows all your open windows. much easier to navigate between multiple windows. Cost loads more than an equivilent system, but i can see why people love it.. its so intuitive and easy to use.

I agree there are some neat tricks in OSX but when you say a 'four finger swipe down (or was it up?)' is intuitive I'm not so sure. a) I'd never have thought of that and b) you can't remember which it was.

The lack of intuitiveness is also highlighted with

Another way to show all windows of an application is to click and hold for a second on the application's icon in the dock.

Another neat trick, not intuitive to me, but makes my life easier when I know/can remember it.

When I was looking to buy my iMac I had a demo in the Apple store and the hired help took great delight in explaining how great OSX was because I could do a CMD-Q to quit an application. Alt-F4 anyone ;)

I think the logic there is that Q is for Quit so it's somewhat more intuitive than F4.

I did appreciate the Q link but he was telling me about how great keyboard shortcuts are. I've been using my iMac for everything for 2 months now where I can, I still have to use a PC for 20% of the time as equivalent software does not exist in the Mac world. Mainly dev tools for embedded systems. Yes I know there are open source alternatives for some of the stuff but it's generally incomplete and and slows the process down. To me OSX has not been a life changing experience. It's swings and roundabouts. I love some of the stuff Windows does, tiling windows for one. This would be more useful in OSX because of the lack of window sizing points.

I got better touch tool so I can snap windows now :)

What other helpful 'commands' do you guys know? I like the 4 finger swip to show open windows, and cmd+q to shut a window!

How do I do ctrl c and ctrl v like in windows?

Also how do I open a new tab in safari? Can I set it so 3finger swipe will scroll through the open tabs ?

The only good laptop is a dead one - I truly hate the things no matter who makes them, they really are poor relations to a good Desktop. As regards OS X v Windows 7 - no winner here they both do the job equally well. Of the two machines I prefer my Windows 7 HP Quad and the wife prefers the iMac.

But I cant carry my desktop around me unfortunately.

CMD + Q quits
CMD + W closes a window (or a tab)

ctrl c + ctrl v is CMD + C and CMD +V (and CMD Z and CMD X, natch)

To open new tab in Safari, CMD + T

Using BTT you can configure a gesture to map to a keyboard short cut, i.e. CTRL + TAB and CTRL + SHIFT + TAB on a per app basis, i.e. Safari, and that should get you gesture based tab switching :) /using that technique you can do many many things in many programs using mad skillz on the trackpad:)

And to reference my previous posts, the combo is CMD + ~ ( the key with ~ and ` on, which is to the left of my Z key) This cycles through open windows of the current app.

CMD Q is definitely comfier. My favourite thing about Mac shortcuts, they're much comfier. A lot less pinky action going on.

I don't deny that Laptops have a place e.g. mobile business user etc. However, for home use then for me never, even if I lived in a shoe I would still find space for my Desktop.

I was in the Apple store today and the sales assistant was pestering me to try the iPad, kept extolling the virtues of it as an eReader. That did it for me as I then asked the assistant to explain how a back-lit screen would be more restful on the eyes as opposed to e-ink. Soon gave up when I started firing tech questions back at him.
