stock 5770 or vapor x 5770

Hey moults, when you buy let us know :p I am on the edge of buying a 5770 also after my 9800 gx2 died last week. Can't decided ASUS, Powercooler or the XFX one :P

I got an Asus CuCore a few days ago (got it cheap to replace my 4870 :P), and it's good but not fantastic. The heatsink isn't really big enough to keep the fan speed down, but as long as you don't overclock the crap out of it, it's fine. The fan is whisper quiet below 60%, but you can hear it a little as it ramps up (it does have a slight high pitched whine if that bothers you).
I have mine stable at 950/1350 @ 1.21 volts. It seems stable at 980 on the core at 1.3 volts, but I don't see the point in a large voltage increase for such a small gain. I like the voltage tweak since it does give me the flexibility to also under volt if I'm playing a game that doesn't require much power (although Afterburner only goes down to 1.0v, bah!). Overclocked, it does hang around 55-75% fan at hits 70-80 degrees on the core if I don't ramp the fan up manually. VRMs aren't really cooled by much, but not seeing high temps on them to be honest (at least compared to my 4870!).

It's a LOT quieter than my Toxic Vapor X 4870 though, since the fan on that would get VERY loud trying to cool the VRMs... -_-

Also in all, unless you can get an MSI Hawk 5770 (1025-1050mhz stable in some reviews, looooooool), I think Asus CuCore is one of the better ones... I just wish they'd made the cooler a LITTLE bit better... :/

I have the ref xfx card and its great. Very quite even when gaming clocked to 950/1400 i never hear it.

I'd just buy the cheapest 5770 available. All of the coolers are fine, it hardly makes a difference.
Not only are they fine for 1680, they're fine for 1080p if you're prepared to spend a short time optimising your settings.
If you do decide to step up, then get the cheapest 5830 available (see the pattern ?) but I think you'll get a great gaming experience with a single 5770.

I'd buy the 5830 for the extra power it will bring, a single 5770 wont really give you the best value unless you later crossfire them, that is/was there main selling point.

i would go for 5830 as you'll always think i should off got that one when ever you have to lower any settings
and most people always think if i get that one i can get another and CF/SLI them
but normally when you get to that point you can normally sell your gfx card put the money you was going to spend on a second card and get a better more powerful more power friendly single gpu solution
so my 2 cents would go for the 5830 as normally the people who do multi gpus buy all there cards at the same time :)

I got a Sapphire 5770 for £131, temperatures are great and I've reached 960/1350 on stock voltages, and during games load temperatures never go above 75 degrees! Great card!

I must admit, I have been looking at the 5830 for last week or so seems a decent card for the money it can be had for.

I'm happy with my Sapphire 5770 too though but caught in two minds, buy another and CF or sell it and buy a 5830.

I don't think the gains are enough to warrant going from 5770 to 5830 i would say the minimum upgrade is 5850 (this is what i did) the 5770 handles most games really well anyway so do think carefully before taking the plunge

Absolutely the answer I was looking for!

Probably best to just get another 5770 when I find I need some more grunt, I still only play COD4 and L4D2

Thanks

Even at 1920x1200 a 5770 is plenty for cod 4 and l4d2 i used mine at 1920x1080 and it was a great card only reason i upgraded was due to a hefty tax rebate and wanting a new bit of kit to play with. Seriously if you only play a handful of games hold out until the 6000 series arrives then re-think your options

I bought my Vapour X when it was at 139 inc. vat. It's very small, quick, extremely quiet and for my needs (1920x1200), pretty much perfect.

At £155 I would look for something else though. That's a tad much for middle of the road.
