Since my netgear dg834gt has now completely failed (cheap custom firmware pos) I need to go out and buy a new router tomorrow, only problem is I don't know the connection settings for sky, I have my username and password that they tried to conceal from me (idiots) and I know that it's pppoa, but I assume I need to enter a server address or something?

I don't think so mate, should just be your username, password, PPPoA and VC-based (VPI = 0, VCI = 38)

What's wrong with the dg834gt ?

I heard they will cut your service if they find out, can you just ring sky and get a new one, i did, turned out to be the power supply not the router though

They can't find out, nor would they throw away my custom over changing the router, I don't want to be without internet for a week waiting for sky to replace it.

AFAIK you need a working router's MAC address, which may be printed on the bottom of the router. There are tools out there to generate user/password login details from this (skyuser forum will have the links).
I'm sure it is technically possible for Sky to detect a non-Sky router, but whether they do, or are bothered about the breach of Ts&Cs, is another matter.
I've not had any real problem with the sky dg834gt apart from it gets a bit hot (I thought I did at one point and I now have a spare). Given the average pc/adsl knowledge of the average punter, I can see why they went for a "plug and play" approach which avoids users struggling to setup their router to get connected.

I had to go through the spanish inquisition to get my 2nd router from Sky. My original DG384GT was rebooting constantly and needed 30 minutes rest to work on occasion.

I think I had to speak to about 3 people about the faults before they agreed to send me a new one.

Once I got the dg934 router I flashed the 834 with the DGTeam firmware and it's never had a problem since. The 834 has better wireless coverage than the 934, even after I modded the 934 to have an external antenna. The 934 must output at a lower power or something.

*no one* expects the Spanish Inquisition... (sorry, it just has to be done!).

Funny enough, I didn't have any trouble with Sky once past the usual scripted front-line staff who try to rule out the obvious and internal wiring etc. Once I was speaking to more tecchie staff a new router was in the post pretty quickly.

The username and password are hardcoded into the router and you can't get them out without using "dodgy" methods. My limited experience of using a non-Sky router wasn't good - speeds were down and the line kept resetting a couple of times an hour.

Sky can to an extent tell what's connected to the line as they have remote access into their standard routers to reconfigure them and upgrade the firmware.

Phone up Sky at which point they'll try and charge you £35 for a new router. Threaten to cancel and you should get a new one for free.

There's no dodgy methods involved, your username is your mac followed by @skydsl, the mac is spoofed so they can't tell I'm using a different router.

Well I suppose it's a bit 'dodgy' insofar as using a different router is against the Sky Ts&Cs. Spoofing the MAC is possibly not enough to make the swap completely invisible, as there is other stuff the sky-supplied router will support that your replacement wouldn't (firmware updates, remote diagnostics?).
Anyway, it seems that lots of people are using other routers without any grief so hope you get it sorted quickly.

Got it in one.

Also Sky won't give you the password if requested, so I'd like to see a legitimate way that couldn't loosely be called hacking for obtaining it.

Anyway best of luck...

How could anyone call reading 192.168.0.1/netgear.cfg "hacking"? In any case my new router is working now and is connected 1Mb faster than before so I'm not complaining.

Sky can't access the router remotely, my firmware was never updated once, so I don't know where you read that.

That doesn't mean they can't do it: http://www.sky.com/helpcentre/broadband/troubleshooting/router-software-upgrades/index.html. I remember one update happening a couple of years ago but they're not frequent.

I'm pleased you've got the new router working :). It feels like you've got a strangely argumentative approach towards those trying to offer help, mind.

I'm grateful for the advice I've received, I can't see how I've been argumentative though, just stating that there's nothing to worry about, if sky tried to update my official router it probably wouldn't have worked because the firmware wasn't functioning correctly, despite being able to browse the internet at times. So if the issue ever arose I'd put it down to the faulty router. :)

I'm not going to rise to the first comment as you seem to want an argument about it.

As for remote access - my DG834GT had the firmware remotely upgraded twice in the time I had it. It's now dead after everything stopped working apart from the ethernet switch, got the new Netgear black type to replace it a couple of months ago.

This was the second update : http://www.skyuser.co.uk/index.php?news=2837
