PS3 overheating

Hi,
I have a first gen. play station 3 40gb. Lately it has been getting very hot and the system fans have be going full out; making the console very loud. I was wondering if anyone knew any ways to fix this problem. Have already tried moving it so it was closer to the window this hasn’t effected it.

I am willing to try and MOD it or replace fans.
Thanx

give it a good cleaning, if you're willing to take it apart open it up and clean the crap out of the heat sink fins.

Mine has been doing the same, it's annoyingly loud. The weather may have something to do with it but it hasn't been this loud in past summers, my mates was doing the same before it died, there was probably a self destruct code in one of the latest updates :)

First thing I would suggest is to try hoovering around the vents of the PS3 to try and clear out some of the dust (it's inevitable that it will be full off dust if it's 2-3 yrs old) - if you have a can of air then try blowing it through the vents to see if you can blow some of the stubborn dust out too (my mate used a compressor on his and he said the amount of crap it blew out was unbelievable).

If this doesn't work then you could try opening her up (plenty of instructions on the net showing how to do this) and then hoover the dust out while it's open. This isn't too difficult - if you have upgraded PC parts etc yourself before then it's not beyond you.

If that doesn't work then I would say the thermal paste which Sony use has probably gone off - they use really cheap white paste which goes brittle after a few years of constantly heating and cooling, then it can crack and becomes insufficient for conducting the heat.

The only way from there is to remove the thermal paste and apply some new - most people on here would recommend Arctic Silver 5. Beware though - I have done this to two consoles, the first worked brilliantly and made the console a lot quieter but when I did my own it became as noisy as hell afterwards. When I opened it back up I discovered the heatsinks weren't making proper contact with the GPU & CPU and after much head scratching and several rebuild attempts I couldn't figure out why... eventually sold it on the MM to someone who said he could possibly fix it - still waiting on update!

The last resort of reapplying thermal paste should only be attempted if you confidently know what you are doing though.

How long this been going on? mines been doing it for 2 weeks now, im thinking its the weather

Same here. I hardly use it and have just these last 2 weeks started playing uncharted 2. The console is usually really quiet and when I played Assassins creed 2 a few months back the fans didn't speed up at all. In fact, ive never heard the fans speed up like this before, even last summer.

It is hot in my room, usually 25-28oc but it was last summer as well. I'm guessing there must be a problem with the console, or uncharted 2 is just much more demanding on the system :p.

I'm thinking of swapping it for a slim as ive been wanting a slim for a while now anyway. Hopefully it'll be quieter under load in hot weather.

Anyone got a slim that's doing the same?

Mine is doing something like that, but not quite the same. It is as hot as hell in my little room (30+ for sure) with the slim on my desk in a nice open area. After some gaming the fan inside it can become slightly audible but that's not the worry I'm having.

After turning it off, my slim will some times make very odd sounds, much like a car engine after being switched off after driving for some time. Last night (well, this morning), a very loud crack came from the console not too different from the sound of plastic being forcefully snapped in half.

That sounds odd, probably not something to worry about though. My TV sometimes makes weird sounds after turning it off.

Does you slim's fan speed up to annoying levels when gaming. I think mine goes full speed, its almost unbearable.

I'm thinking of swapping it in for a 250gb slim as my one 40gb and gets full far too fast.

How much would I get for a 40gb fat PS3 at one of the highstreet games shops?

No, remember when you first got the 40gb PS3 that you could hear the fans spin up fir the first few seconds then go into quiet mode. My slim sometimes goes into that slightly elevated state but not full on that sounds like a hair dryer.

No idea on the trade in value. Post up a thread in the Member's Market on here or have a look at the purple shirt highstreet place, they gave a cracking price on my 360 Elite when I had to sell it.
