Today went with a bang!

Personally I really like your posts, especially when you chirp in your low mpg figures into a thread :p

The "Baloons" are @ 125PSI, most cars are around 30, its one hell of a bang!
Judging by the damage to the cab the comments about grenades aren't far off. I suppose it's no surprise that so many do explode if they're under that much pressure. I'm just glad I've not been near one when it does.

Lady luck was certainly smiling on you that day. Enjoy a few cool ones before you get back in the saddle.

This is why when on motorways when trucks are in the slow lane I always move two lanes over into the fast lane and get past them quickly.

When its a dual carriage-way and I have to pass next to them I give it full power past them, which can mean hitting quite high speeds, but I want past fast. But when I've done this Ive seen truckers flash at me, are they flashing to say that sounds nice or it shifts well or are they annoyed in someway because I passed them to quickly?

Just another reason for lorries to be banned from UK roads................

:p

/RUN!

Seriously though, is it not easier for another cab to be deployed so the load can carry on to its destination? (if you were carrying that is)

If it were me you'd just passed, certainly the former rather than the latter. :)

Due to the damage, I could not pull my 'unit from under the trailer, so it had to be recovered back to the local Scania agant, which was around 8 miles away, once we arrived, I notified my local depot and they had a replacement truck (and driver) to pick up me and my gear from out of my cab and to take the load onward for delivery.

The A50 in Stoke is limited too 50mph and R420LA6X2 glad you are ok (and I was wondering what part this happened on as there was an almighty mess was on the road coming past the Brittania Stadium junction the otherday)

Was the tyre still good quality with plenty of thread left? I am just asking as my father is a lorry driver and have heared him saying that it is important not to save money on front tyres as any bang on them can leave you with some dangerous situation when going 60mph.

Near the Blythe Bridge Roundabout.

Around 5mm I'd guess, if you check the pictures, it seems the sidewall gave way.

Wow, amazing to see what damage a truck tyre can do. Have a nice day off:)

If I recall correctly, experiments on Mythbusters indicated that a blown truck tire could throw off debris with enough force to smash through a car window and decapitate a person inside. Actually decapitate, not just kill. Of course, in reality the debris will go in line with the tire, not sideways into another vehicle. Hence the damage to the OP's truck.

wowzers. i cant imagine how it must have felt thinking you could have squashed people :(

one reason i dont like to hang about next to lorries

Wow. That's truly scary - glad you're OK, thats some pretty fearsome damage!

Mental note made to drop a gear and get a shift on when passing trucks...

Wow, glad you're okay man. That must have been really unsettling and it's just amazing that no one else was involved. Out of interest, who covers you in the event that something happened and affected another road user and it was out of your control (like this example but with injuries)? Is it company insurance or do you have personal cover, too, for, say, a death or very serious injury? Sorry to be so negative, I'm curious.

Had I hit somebody and - God forbid - done them some harm, I'd guess the companys vehicle insurers would take care of it.

Personally, I don't have life insurance etc, perhaps I now should think of getting some?

Naah! - My plan to live for ever has been working just fine for the past 39 years.... ;)

Holy cow brother. I didn't realise it had such an effect on you after you texted me about it (I think while I was in Cornwall?)... But your account here and the images say a LOT. All I care about is you're ok, and that no one else was caught up in it. Losing a front tyre is about as rough as it gets in almost any vehicle I can think of, particularly bikes and trucks...

Plenty relieved you're ok, really and that you're back to work like 'normal'. I'm always the other end of the phone mate. I mean it, take care.

Glad to hear you're ok, it is frightening to see this happen, but to be in the cab on the receiving end...

Makes me realise just how dangerous it is when I check these tyres for VOSA inspections, seeing cords sticking out of treads or bulges on the sidewalls, I wonder on some units I check over just how many drivers take their daily safety checks that seriously, they would if they had this happen to them! (This is a minority tho.)

I can imagine Scania will be changing the airhoses on the offside front brake chamber just for safety reasons, other than that it would be cosmetic repairs.

A story to tell the kids as they say! :)
