Whats the general consensus on this, is it ok to have your case painted or is it a step too far?

If you have painted your case, show us!

Apologies if a thread already exists for this, i did a search and found nothing.

You can paint it yourself if you don't want to go to the hassle of totally dis-assembling it

It will take a lot of time and effort and require a lot of patience in the preparation.

This is the first proper case i've ever sprayed, although I have sprayed 2 Antec skeletons.

before I did this i'd never really touched a spray can in my life.

From this....

To this...Still not done yet though.

yeah get it powder coated wouldnt waste your time on areosol cans.

just wondered if you'd like to qualify your comment.

not really sure what you mean by wasting your time?
takes a fair bit of time to take a case apart rivit by rivit, and even more to put it back together, ensuring good fit lines for all the panels.
powdercoating cost a fair bit also.

painting with rattlecans is alsolabour intensive but is also cheaper and leaves you knowing you did it all yourself.

OP asked for pics re your work to back up your opinion so lets have em matey

ok, time for me to come clean, last weekend i modded my Antec 900 case to allow much better cable management, whilst i was working on the case i asked a painter i know about painting my case for me, here's the result...

The photos don't really pick out how "sparkly" the finish is, its a Midnight Blue metallic base with Marlboro orange flames and a white pinstripe, finished with a glitter lacquer, i was going to go for something much more low key but when the painter showed me the colour combination i couldn't say no.

Very nice spyke, and I mean very nice

But why the question in the original post?

If you wanted to show us a great case (which this is) then just post it matey

No need to be shy

I just wasn't sure if it was a "step too far", i know the paint scheme will not be to everyones taste, but i have seen very little posts in these forums about custom painted cases, thanks for the comments though, the guy who painted it for me has really made a top job.

Not really my cup of tea (Spyke) but a great job non the less :D

And very nice G-Dubs, always follow your builds :D

Wife'd go ape if I painted my case with those flames, but it is a great looking effect. She'd like the sparkles though.

Great job to both of you.

you dont really get a real good job outta a paint can. id prefer taking to to a professional place and getting it sprayed powder coated. theres a place near my area that does powder coating and its not that much.

"sprayed powder coated"

It's electrostatically applied, not sprayed.

You can get a decent finish from a spray can, but powder coating in general will be tougher and more hardwearing than most rattle can jobs.

Spraypaint if you know what you are going it may be cheap but if you get it wrong it`s going to look crap, powdercoating is better as it will not chip like paint will and you can get all sort of colours and finishes.
