Hi, I may be in a position where i may have to sell my current car, 2005 Audi A3 sportback. Basically, we've found a house we want and the car may have to go to help secure it :) Therefore, i'm looking the best i can get for ~ 5k.

Sensible me is thinking another Mondeo, but better spec than my old one. I will also probably looking at a diseasal again as i'll be doing a 40 mile round trip twice a day to work.

I'd love to stay German in an ideal world, but i doubt 5k will get me much :(

I am open to suggestions though :)

I would like something relatively quick and with some toys.

Thanks

If you need the money for the deposit, why not spend less on a car. That way you can put more down.
£3k would get you a great diesel mondeo

Surely a 2005 A3 isn't worth enough for selling it and buying a £5k car to be worth doing?

What is it with people on here selling cars and buying new ones for so much money that they end up releasing hardly anything?

Either:

a) Don't bother and keep the Audi
b) Buy a £1500 car.

Half hearted efforts are pointless.

Assuming it's a 2005 with 75k on it you'll get about £8k for it. It simply isn't worth getting rid of it and buying into potential issues in a cheaper car to release less than £3k.

I am planning on getting a 9-5 aero once my 330ci is sold. You can pick them up for very little money!! You could probably get 2005 9-5 for that sort of money.

True, although depends if he's just 3k short on the deposit then this does the job nicely :)

If he's 3k short on the deposit it would make me wonder if he has considered the cost of owning a home overall :p
it's not cheap :p

Here we go...

To be fair, in the situation the entire sale is being conducted for financial reasons, it's fair game to comment on the financials if someone thinks something is clearly lacking.

I'm sure it would be preferred to doing the deed and realising you've actually not achieved much other than get a worse car.

Agree you should get something cheaper. If you're within 3k of the LTV you need to get a mortgage, you're probably a bit close for comfort. You'd want to be a bit under the minimum to help you ride any dips in the market and give you some more equity which you can fall back on in the future,

I don't agree with the sentiment that you shouldn't be buying a house if you don't happen to have a spare 3k in your back pocket, but maybe just approach it from a different perspective

Maybe he has seen a house that he REALLY likes and hasn't quite saved up for the entire deposit. He might just be £2 - 3k short.

At no point in his OP did he ask for any advice about how he could buy a £1.5k car and save even more money or did he at any point ask for any financial advice about how expensive it will be to own a house. Pretty sure he just might of worked the figures out?

What he did ask was what car could he buy for £5,000, after all this is a car forum isn't it?

Jesus.

So offer a car for £5k.

I suggest a mondeo for no more than £3k, fits his requirement and saves him money.

Is this with the new girl you've known a few months btw, maybe rent for a while first and make sure it works better than the very public issue you had in GD a while back :p

Depends on the situation, for instance what if they were planning on buying in 6 months, but the perfect house has come up now and thus the extra 3k they would have, but do not at the moment, is needed now?

We just don't know, so back to my original comment if the shortfall is just 3k then this kind of makes sense.

That seems the common answer these days, what's so good about them? (not a fan of saabs myself so no idea!)

I dont know iv always liked them, comfy seats, plenty of room, bomb proof engine and gearbox, high spec, good build quality.

I think they drive well too and now they are cheap. A wall fell on my old one, i stupidly replaced it with a Peugeot 407 for kicking about and shopping runs, but thats another story :)
