Hi all,

Looking at getting a food temp probe. Been doing some research and you can spend around £200 for a pro one! Now I have seen a few on the bay for less than £10. Has anyone had any experience of these and the accuracy?

Thanks for your help

:)

A £10 will be fine, really no need to spend anymore.

Everywhere I've worked with food they've used cheap ones because they work perfectly well and there is nothing more needed!!!

My sister has one from Lakeland. No idea how much it was but she swears by it for taking the temperature of meat etc.

We've had a few cheap ones in the past which break after a while. They also all took ~20 seconds to get a reading (despite them saying they're instant read on the box). I never really realised this so ended up overcooking stuff thinking that it was still cold when infact the thermometer was still "warming up".

I spent a good while looking into a new one to go for (I've scoured half the Internet!) and ended up choosing the Superfast Thermapen (note: most shopping sites don't sell the superfast version). It uses a thermocouple circuit so gets an accurate reading in ~4 seconds but gives a (pretty accurate) one in a second. Comes with a calibration certificate too :o.
