Driving, women vs men?

&

Indeed, logic would suggest this is the correct route...but this is asim18.

Must say, when I was a young'un I used to drive like that, pointless though, so these days I drive properly (yes that is a matter of opinion :p).

It's a bit kinder on the car than using the clutch to catch the car from rolling back, you need three feet to do that without the handbrake.

never use the handbrake on a hill, just as easy going into neutral and using the foot brake which will help prolong the life of the handbrake cable

Or heel and toe.

So the car doesn't roll back in the half of second or so it takes to move your right foot from the brake to the accelerator.

It's a pointless argument, there's handbrake there, you might as well use it then get leg cramp from holding the clutch all the time.

Also if I'm on a road with no parked cars on my side, cars parked on the opposite side with a car coming down towards me with half the car over the central line, if I swipe the entire side of the car whose fault would it be? I'm getting sick of people round my way leaving a 6 foot gap on their side and squeezing me over almost onto the kerb.

It all depends, you have right of way, but if the commit to going and you have chance to stop and dont, its your fault in any collision.

No one is arguing mate. It's just what I do. And no, I don't get leg cramp from holding the clutch down. :)

I know it's odd...but I agree with asim18 here, it's very easy to skip pedals and not roll backwards.

I agree with you though, might as well use the handbrake if you're going to use a brake, much simpler and avoids the possibility of rolling backwards.

More disputing the fact he can get away with not using the handbrake at all. I sit on the brake and clutch if it's for a short time and there isn't much of an incline but there's situations were you need to do it.

This would depend totally on the situation. If it's at a set of lights and I'll be there a long time (like I just missed going through them), then I'll use the handbrake. If it's going to be a short while, I'll just balance the clutch and, if necessary, apply 1000 RPM or so. If it's a junction with no lights, always ride the clutch, up to 1500 RPM-ish, so I'm poised for a quick getaway.

Since passing my test I've never used the handbrake on a hill and I wouldn't dare sit with a burning clutch. In all cases, I apply the foot brake and take it out of gear until the lights change, sharply stick it back into gear and you're off!

Most cars have anti-stall features, if I think I'm going to be at a junction for not long (but longer than I would consider fair on the clutch), I'll clutch in and footbrake to a complete stop, as I'm about to set off, I bring the clutch up to the bite, and can release it slowly, the car keeps itself at idle whilst I ease off the brake and get on the accel. This whole process only takes about a second so not riding the clutch much.

Our Passat has Auto-Hold so I just stop, take the car out of gear and take my feet off all pedals and it stays put until I pop it back in gear and pull away. It's taken a while to get used to, not having a normal hand brake and trusting a button felt like a real challenge of confidence :)

I don't think you can separate driving habits by gender, there are some woman I know who could show most men a clean pair of heels, or the automotive equivalent! ;)

I rarely use my handbrake as I was told the calipers are knackered and could stick.
Either way, my überdieseltorxxx allow me to crawl up even the steepst of hills in 1st on the clutch without even touching the throttle

On a serious note, it depends on the car. If it's powerful enough then balancing on the clutch gives you plenty of time to move off the brake on to the throttle.
I was taught to do either, the instructor wasn't bothered.

As for cars coming towards you overtaking parked cars, if they're on your side of the road then they can get stuffed.
