One dashboard light gone behind the no lights, parking lights, main beam lights switch (can live with this, have done for a year or so) but also one gone behind (i assume it's behind and not part of...) the odometer - bit more annoying.

Ford Focus, 2002 - any rough estimates of price? Also I think the button has gone on my main car key (unlocks all the time, but takes about a million presses to lock the car, battery changed last week.

Going to ask at garage but no idea how easy it is to get to these components so don't know if they are taking the mick or not?
Cheers!

Do you mean you have no dashboard illumination behind the headlight switch and odometer?

I was told it's the actuator on the central locking. I have this problem. I was quoted a couple of hundred just to sort it out so didn't bother. The Focus's central locking is made of cheese.

Depends mate, if they're replaceable filament bulbs then they cost a couple of pounds each and removing the speedo is normally a simple case of removing shrouding and a few screws. If they're LED's, then they may be a bit more expensive to replace unless you know someone who is handy with a soldering iron.

As above, it sounds like a solenoid is faulty rather than the button. These are cheap on eBay and not hard to replace - then it depends on how mechanically minded you are I suppose. If you're sure it's the button at fault then it's most likely a dodgy solder joint in the key, easy to fix or buy a new one off eBay for £30~ (don't throw the old one away though as you may need the transponder from it).

I have the same issue with my Fiesta!

This the key:

It locks the car and opens the boot fine. It just sometimes takes a number of presses to unlock. Must be a common problem. The only fix I can see is a new fob, which is inexpensive. However the cost of getting it cut and programmed from Ford is probably a fair bit so I'm just waiting untill it completely conks out and then just get a new one.

The key part is removable from the remote, so you could save the cost of a recut and buy a remote on eBay etc.

Awesome. Thanks - didn't know that! Although the cutting is normally the cheapest thing?

Yeah, I think it cost me £15 to get my ST fob cut some time back. Programming you can do yourself so long as you have the spare key, so really the most expensive part will be the remote.

The remotes are cheap too. I'll give this a go. Even if it doesn't work I'll still have all the bits and just get it done. The only reason I've held off is that from what I've been told the cost to get it done is a few hundred. Considering it still functions I didn't see the need.

So long as you have the drivers key and a spare (programmed) fob you can program other keys yourself for free. However if you were to lose the spare leaving you with just the drivers key then it would cost a lot (£150~ from experience) for Ford to reprogram the system.

Even then, if it's only the unlock/lock PCB that's at fault you can always just swap the PCB with one from a new fob, retaining the separate immobiliser chip in the old casing and saving any reprogramming hassle (though you would still need to program the unlock/lock - it should tell you how to do this in the owners manual or try Google).

In your situation, it should be an easy and cheap fix :)

Yeah I have the main fob and spare - so you think I can swap the remote part of the keys without having to reprogram / recut?

@Ricochet J: The speedo etc is lit up fine, it's just the LED part within the speedo (showing how many miles I've done etc).

You can swap the remote part and you'll need to reprogram the immobiliser and lock/unlock, as you have both a main key and a spare you can reprogram yourself for free.
