Hi all. I have called in sick. I hate ringing in as I know the department will suffer and I probably would be moaned at when I go back.

Story goes like this.

I am a fishbar manager and have one 39 hour one 30 hour and one 20 hour. The 20 hour staff member went off sick 4 weeks ago with a virus and is still off for this week now. The 39 hour lad has been off for two weeks holiday and the 30 hour girl handed her notice in and lafte last Friday.

The last 4 weeks there has been only TWO of us every week, what with sick and holidays. Last week the cover I normaly get to help out was on holiday and various other semi trained staff where either on courses or holidays. Last week I did 7 days.
Mon 6-3
Tues 6-3
Wed 1-8
Thur 10-10 On my own from 1-10
Fri 6-6 On my own 6-3
Sat 6-6:30 On my own all day
Sun 7-5:30 On my own all day

Out of these hours/days I have one, one hour lunch break. Yes I do have the odd fag. Salad bar cover around 9 am for 10 mins whilst I pop out for a fag and if I am lucky I might get another somewhere else in the day.

My last day off was Wednesday, not last week but the previous week and my next due day off is Saturday this week and Sunday (going away for a few days). So I would be doing 16 days straight. Not healthy at all.

I got home yesterday and felt fine, tired but fine. Had tea, walked the dog and watched the World cup final. Once I was ready to go to bed I felt like crap. Head bungged up, shakes, felt a little sick and my back was killing me. Alarm went of at 4:40 this morning and I could have died. Never felt like this for a very long time. My missus told me to ring in. I couldnt, I know what I will get when I go back. The rota is all messed up not having staff and trying to cover shift etc. I sat on the edge of my bed and broke down in tears. I cant do this anymore its killing me.

I called in after thinking about it. They will have to get cover, they leave it to me to organise it now its thier turn to do it. I have no idea what this compnay si coming too. They keep telling me to find cover myself. HOW? I am on the fishbar on my own, serving, filling up etc, How can I possibly ring other staff, walk to other departments asking for cover whilst trying to maintain a sucsessful department.

Its beyond a joke now. Do you think I have done the right thing?

I am making an appointment to see the doctor today and get some time off. Once I get the sick note I will feel a hell of a lot better.
Sorry for the rant.

Yeah I guess it is. Its a nightmare at that place now. I have no life. My mate on here wants to go out on our bikes but I cant because I am just too tired after work. My missus is upset as we never have good time together, Yes we see each other very day but that time is spent with me being lazy. She doesnt blame me though which is good.

You part of a union? Maybe go speak to them.

No I am not. :( To be truthful once a manager goes to the union for whatever reason, they are pretty much added to the Store managers hit list, I am not joking either. The Butchery manager was forced out at the beggining of the year.

You shouldn't be put in the position to be in tears because you can't go to work. Morrison's sound like a right bunch of ****s to work for, everyone that I have spoken to hates the place with a passion.

You've probably put yourself on the hit list by going sick mate. If it's anything like a certain supermarket then Managers are expected to cope with whatever comes there way even if it means staying 2 hours after unpaid to finish the section.
Best thing you can do is get down the Doctors ASAP & get a sick note for stress related illness & then approach your employer to work out how the stress at work can be relieved as you can't handle it anymore.
Communication is the key. ;)

Best of luck mate.

They are now. Once Sir Ken moved on it went downhill. If he was still there I can say with my hand on my heart ALL departments would be fully staffed. Now we have The American in charge he will be doing it the American way which I have been told is worse than what its like now. God help us all.

There are a lot of managers feeling the same as me. The only difference is they have some ammount of staff. I am greatfull they could lend me help sometimes.

Just quit and get another job. Free market yo.

Back in the real world though, that sounds bloody awful - definitely get a doctors note and tbh stand up for yourself. Look at it this way, if you're the only one holding the department together imagine how far up a certain creek they'd be if they lost you as well now - you may be surprised how much leverage you have.

Get it all in written down while it's fresh as well in terms of them not replacing people and the amount of shifts you are doing - never know when it might come in useful.

Keep going up through the levels until someone listens to you, if your store manager won't, talk to the area manager - maybe once you hit people that can actually do their job you might have a bit more luck getting it sorted. :)

You shouldn't have to put up with that, if you're sick then you need time to recover. As suggested get to the doctors asap and at least get some form of diagnosis that can back you up if they try and mess you around.

sound's pretty bad there m8.

im sure malc can vouch for this but try tesco for a managers job as they are always needing managers.

Maybe you could join a different union, one that isn't recognised in your work place? Obviously there are down sides to that but you should at least be able to get proper advice from them on your rights.

Unfortunatly that wont work, talking to higher levels because this 'cutting back on staff' has come from the top. We are not laying people off its far from that. They are just not recruiting. I wont get a replacement for my lass how left last week. I have been told to get other staff who are not full time to do extra hours on the fishbar, HOW HARD IS THAT.. No one wants to work with fish.. Simple as.

The area manager joined us in a managers meeting a few months back and said times are going to be hard now. We all have to chip in and help each other out, ONE TEAM 'n all that. No one can spare any staff because we dont have any. You ask any 'M' employee. I think there area few on these forums actually.

What rattles mine and every other managers cage is the fact the senoir team come in at 7 and finish at 5 or on sunday 8-5 where as all us lot are in before them and still there when they are putting feet up at home. And they moan at us for wanting to go home. On Friday I asked to see if I could go home at 5 as I am doing 7 days and silly hours and all I got was 'you know you cant finish before 5 rules are not meant to be broken' I was like **** you ****.

I'd be tempted to just 'order' staff to help you out, if each department 'manager' is at roughly the same position in the store food chain then march over and take someone off another department and lay down how ridiculous it is the amount you've been working. Cook up a nice little dispute and it should get the notice of the higher-ups at the very least :D

I get the impression that supermarket work sometimes is a case of just being obstinate enough to get your own way - and remember the maxim it's always easier to get forgiveness than permission.

Lol... I have been doing that. Ordering staff to help me out. They dont like it but I say you have too. I do say to them I am doing too many hours and am totaly knackard. I need help.. Even for 30 minutes so I can fill this and that up.

Best thing is. This Friday we are having a huge visit from some American Investors. So everyone has to have a really top notch closed down Thursday night and back in friday early. I always do Thurs late and early Friday and they are always ace. Everything filled up in the evening so when I come in on Friday all I have to do is put thefresh fish out...

Good luck with that this week.

My missus is going to help me with my CV this week and I will be looking for a new job.
